Five Games: ‘Final Fantasy XIV’ for PS4 And Everything Else You Need To Play This Week

Consoles, PCs, handhelds, Facebook, smartphones — the world of gaming is becoming increasingly confusing and fragmented, but don’t worry, we’re here to simplify things for you. Each week I’ll rattle off five games I think you might want to check out this week. Keep in mind, these articles aren’t meant to be comprehensive lists of everything coming out that week so much as a nice rounded tasting menu. So, let’s get to it…

This Week’s Indie Game

Life Goes On (PC, Mac & Linux, Apr. 17th)

Life Goes On takes the “progress through death” ethos of games like Dark Souls to a new more literal level. Basically, the game is a puzzle platformer in which you have to use the corpses created by your failures to progress — impale your knight on a row of spikes, then use that dead knight as a platform to get your next knight across the hazard. I have to say, Life Goes On looks like delightfully morbid fun.

This Week’s Footie Game

2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil (Xbox 360 & PS3, Apr. 15th)

Is just regular old FIFA 14 not enough soccer gaming for you? Well, EA also has a completely separate game devoted to this year’s World Cup in Brazil! Goooooooal?

This Week’s Weird JRPG

Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars (3DS & PS Vita, Apr. 15th)

The Conception series may be the most Japanese-ey Japanese RPGs ever. Basically the idea of the games is to charm and then make babies with ladies, which you then use to explore dungeons. But don’t worry, these are “Star Children” you create by combining energy, not real children you create by combining, uh, other things. Apparently if you can get past the unique premise these games are pretty good, so hey, have fun baby making.

This Week’s Celebration of Rag Doll Physics

Trials Fusion (Xbox 360, Xbox One & PS4, Apr. 15th)

The addictive dirt bike crashing series returns for yet another entry with Trials Fusion. I’m not sure what exactly is being fused in this game, but hey, for the first time ever you can play a Trials game on a non-Microsoft platform. That’s something!

Pick of the Week

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (PS4, Apr. 14th)

Final Fantasy XIV may have been a bit of a disaster when it launched back in 2010, but Square-Enix has managed through the Realm Reborn relaunch and numerous subsequent updates to largely salvage the experience. Well, now FFXIV arrives on the PS4 with extra pretty graphics and Vita remote play — oh, and if you already bought the PS3 version you can upgrade for free. Not bad.

Any games you’re itching to get your hands on that I failed to mention? Hit the comments and let the world know.
