Five Games: ‘NES Remix 2’ And Everything Else You Need To Play This Week

Consoles, PCs, handhelds, Facebook, smartphones — the world of gaming is becoming increasingly confusing and fragmented, but don’t worry, we’re here to simplify things for you. Each week I’ll rattle off five games I think you might want to check out this week. Keep in mind, these articles aren’t meant to be comprehensive lists of everything coming out that week so much as a nice rounded tasting menu. So, let’s get to it…

This Week’s Indie Adventure Game

The Blackwell Epiphany (PC, Apr. 24th)

The Blackwell games are a series of decidedly old-school adventure games starring a medium and her ghost friend solving mysteries. They’re not groundbreaking, but they fill that Monkey Island/Beneath a Steel Sky void. The game isn’t available on Steam yet, but you can download it here.

This Week’s Music-Adventure Mashup

FRACT OSC (PC & Mac, Apr. 22nd)

Well, this one certainly gets the gold star for most unique concept this week. FRACT is an adventure game in which you explore an open world using music. FRACT essentially takes place inside a giant synthesizer, and as you explore and repair the world, you’ll gain the ability to create music in new ways. Looks like mind-bendy fun.

This Week’s Space Strategy Game

The Last Federation (PC, Mac & Linux, Apr. 20th)

The Last Federation is a turn-based tactical combat game in which you control a fleet of spaceships and wage war across an entire alien galaxy. The game may not be visually astounding, but it looks like it packs a ton of depth, with eight different alien races and countless different ships to choose from.

This Week’s Dungeon Hack JRPG

Demon Gaze (PS Vita, Apr. 22nd)

Demon Gaze is basically a mashup of every Japanese RPG trend you can name. Dungeon hacking? Check. Loot collecting? Check. The ability to collect demons Pokemon style? Check. But hey, what the game lacks in originality it looks to partially make up in presentation. Also, lots of half naked characters.

Pick of the Week

NES Remix 2 (Wii U, Apr. 25th)

Nintendo releases another collection of mini-games and challenges based on NES games this week. NES Remix 2 will mostly cover later, more complex NES games like Metroid, Punch-Out!! and Super Mario Bros. 3, so it should promise to be a bit more interesting than the original NES Remix.

Any games you’re itching to get your hands on that I failed to mention? Hit the comments and let the world know.
