Five Games: ‘Bound By Flame’ And Everything Else You Need To Play This Week

Consoles, PCs, handhelds, Facebook, smartphones — the world of gaming is becoming increasingly confusing and fragmented, but don’t worry, we’re here to simplify things for you. Each week I’ll rattle off five games I think you might want to check out this week. Keep in mind, these articles aren’t meant to be comprehensive lists of everything coming out that week so much as a nice rounded tasting menu. So, let’s get to it…

This Week’s DLC

Outlast: Whistleblower (PC & PS4, May 6th)

Outlast snuck up on gamers like a crazed mental patient to become one of the indie hits of 2013, and now the horror continues. Outlast: Whistleblower is a prequel starring the mysterious man who tipped Miles Upshur off about what was going on at Mount Massive Asylum. Start steeling your nerves now.

This Week’s Handheld Game

The Denpa Men 3: The Rise of Digitoll (3DS, May 9th)

Nintendo’s series of adorable mini-RPGs continues with The Denpa Men 3: The Rise of Digitoll. As in past Denpa Men games, you catch the titular little dudes via an augmented reality mini-game, then set out on dungeon hacking adventures. This newest entry also adds some Animal Crossing-esque elements (you know, just in case the series wasn’t charming enough already).

This Week’s Livestock Herding Game

Flockers (PC, May 6th)

From the makers of the addictive Worms games comes Flockers, which is essentially a new take on the Lemmings formula. Your task is to guide a group of cuddly sheep from point A to B just like Lemmings, but unlike Lemmings the hazards facing you herd are particularly devious and your sheep die very bloody deaths. Fun! A warning, this is an Early Access release, so you won’t get the full game, but you will get a solid 25 stages of woolly mayhem.

This Week’s Adventure Game

Tesla Effect: A Tex Murphy Adventure (PC, Mac & Linux, May 7th)

A lot of games these days claim to be “classic” adventure game experiences, but Tesla Effect: A Tex Murphy Adventure really, truly walks the walk. The first Tex Murphy game in 16-years, Tesla Effect is packed with cheesy full-motion video sequences and first-person gameplay lifted straight from a Myst title. This is what a large portion of adventure games from the 90s actually looked and played like kids.

Pick of the Week

Bound by Flame (PC, Xbox 360, PS3 & PS4, May 9th)

Bound by Flame has snuck under the radar a little bit, but it looks like a solid, lively new action-RPG. You play a character who’s been partially possessed by a demon — as the game progresses you’ll be offered new evil powers, but accepting them means giving over more of your body to the demon. Seems like an interesting half-twist on your typical video game morality systems.
