Tomorrow is America’s birthday, so you know that that means — consuming unwise amounts of grilled meat and gazing at loud colorful explosions! There aren’t really that many games about barbequing, so let’s focus on the latter and run down some bright, colorful, explosive games you should be playing on your day off…

Note: I’m focusing on more recent games here, since most 8 and 16-bit games were pretty colorful. In other words, you can consider, “Dig up your NES/Genesis/SNES” the eighth entry on this list.

Rayman Legends

Rayman Legends is one of the most gorgeous 2D games ever made. It’s absolutely packed with beautiful detail, and some truly eye-popping bosses and set pieces. French guys may have made this game, but it’s the perfect embodiment of Fourth of July festivities.

Prince of Persia (2008)

Oh, the poor 2008 Prince of Persia reboot — it arrived right when grey-brown mania was at its height, and was rejected by most gamers, but this very pretty game has actually aged pretty well. Snatch it from the bargain bin and give it a try.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

This may be the most colorful game of all time. At least the most colorful 3D game. It’s rare to see anything in Wind Waker not bursting with vibrant, primary colors. Dig out your Gamecube or pick up the very spiffy new HD remaster for the Wii U.

Rez & Child of Eden

Want eye-popping, happy-zone activating color in its purest, most undiluted form? Then Rez and its spiritual sequel Child of Eden are the games for you. Oh, and don’t worry, you don’t have to dust off your Dreamcast to play Rez — an HD version was released a few years back for Xbox Live.

Super Mario 3D World

The Mario games are, of course, always popping with color, and Super Mario 3D World may be the most super-saturated Mario adventure yet. Plus you can dress up like a cat, which doesn’t really have anything to do with our Fourth of July theme, but still, it’s a feature worth mentioning.

InFamous: Second Son

Want your color with a little more edge? Well, the InFamous series has always been good about adding a bit of vibrancy to the M-rated, triple-A scene. If you can’t get your hands on some real fireworks, you can at least spend the afternoon shooting them out of your hands in InFamous: Second Son.

Any Worms Games

Man, I love me some Worms. Colorful, not too demanding and packed with joyful destruction, they’re really the perfect games for the Fourth. There are an absurd number of Worms games out there — the most recent, Worms Battlegrounds, came out only a month ago in fact. It really doesn’t matter which one you pick though, since they’re all more or less the same (and all very fun).
