‘Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Had A Lot Of Surprises At Comic-Con

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. managed to salvage a rocky first season, mostly thanks to a surprising twist that carried the show to the finale. That left Coulson as the new director of SHIELD and everyone wondering what the show had in store for season two. Well, we don’t know everything… but a lot came up at San Diego Comic-Con.

First and foremost, you can check out Patton Oswalt goofing with himself in the trailer up above. Apparently there are a lot of Koenings running around, which is fairly intriguing in of itself; are they Life-Model Decoys? Are they clones? Did Momma Koening just beat some incredibly long odds? They also name-drop Mockingbird, a fan favorite and a character who’s involved with Hawkeye, which will likely tie into the Avengers in some curious ways.

Beyond that, they made some points clear for the new season. The bad guy this season will be Daniel Whitehall, aka the Kraken and portrayed by Reed Diamond, notable both for his viciousness as a HYDRA agent and his refusal to stop roaring “Unleash the Kraken!” as a catchphrase.

I may have made that last one up. Anyway, as we noted before, Lucy Lawless will be joining the series, as Isabelle Hartly, a long-time SHIELD agent, and Lance Hunter, played by Nick Blood, will be making an appearance. That last is notable because he’s involved with the British version of SHIELD, STRIKE, and also because Nick Blood is a far cooler name than Lance Hunter.

My only point of concern is that of the characters announced, there’s still the off-and-on use of characters. Why bring in Lucy Lawless to play a character they just made up, when they’ve got plenty to choose from? Still, if they stick with what worked in season one, and don’t have to dance around another summer blockbuster in season two, this show might be a substantial step up.
