Joss Whedon Didn’t Think ‘Daredevil’ Would Work As A TV Show

Netflix has a massive hit on its hands with Daredevil, as we all know. But the show apparently had a surprisingly powerful enemy early on: Joss Whedon.

According to IGN, Whedon thought that only a movie could create the proper mood for Daredevil, although clearly cooler heads prevailed. Here’s Whedon backpedaling!

I like him because he’s basically Marvel’s Batman, thanks to Frank Miller basically. So for me I didn’t think they’d be able to sustain that sort of mood on TV but TV has changed so much. It’s come up so much that I think it might just be the right place.

I actually have to disagree with Whedon on this one; if there’s anything the Daredevil movie proved, it’s that he actually plays better on TV. The reality is, Batman doesn’t need much setup, both because everybody knows his origin, and he’s not really that complicated as a character… dead parents, years of training, beats up the mentally ill. Daredevil isn’t as well-known as Batman. There’s the dead father, the Catholicism, the poor romantic choices, the ninjas, and it’s all just a huge mess. Really, you need a TV series to put that all in a reasonable context.

Then again, Whedon is the guy who rubberstamped the seventh season of Buffy, so maybe we shouldn’t be surprised. This also makes us wonder what decisions he wanted to make for Age of Ultron that we haven’t heard about yet. Well, aside from whom he’s bumping off.
