ABC Has Renewed ‘Agents Of SHIELD’ And ‘Agent Carter’ For Next Season (UPDATE)

ABC has created a solid base for their Marvel-related programming in the 2015-2016 season by renewing their two flagship series from the comics giant. It was probably no question that Agents of SHIELD was going to stick around, given the talk of spin-offs and it’s flimsy connection to the films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it wasn’t a sure bet for Agent Carter. Fans can now breathe a sigh of relief because Peggy Carter will be making her return for another season according to The Hollywood Reporter:

The Captain America: The First Avenger spinoff is Marvel’s first female-driven entry. The drama opened to strong reviews…and soft viewership. The eight-episode series averaged 5 million total viewers and a 1.8 in the demo — and almost doubling its returns when factoring in seven days of DVR viewing.

These two renewals come ahead of Marvel’s two new rumored series on ABC, one the previously mentioned SHIELD spin-off and another that is apparently a “reimagining” of an existing Marvel character according to THR. I’ve read rumors connected to Ms. Marvel, but there’s nothing solid out there other than the plans are in motion.

The renewals, particularly for Agent Carter, show a certain level of commitment from ABC in terms of their Marvel programming and I think anything is possible now. I didn’t expect to see Peggy Carter on TV again, but here we are and we might be better off for it.

UPDATE: Never mind about the spin-off from Agents Of SHIELD. It is apparently dead according to Deadline:

S.H.I.E.L.D. fans have been divided by the spinoff, and there had been some backlash to the idea of taking some of the strongest new characters on S.H.I.E.L.D. away from the mothership series…There was an inkling that the spinoff might not be going forward when ABC tonight renewed both existing Marvel series, S.H.I.E.L.D. for a third season, and Agent Carter, which bridged S.H.I.E.L.D.’s half-seasons this year, for a second.

So things are really looking good for whatever that mystery show is going to be. Mostly because it won’t be SHIELD related.
