Instead Of ‘Batman Begins,’ We Nearly Had A Live-Action ‘Batman Beyond’

Batman Beyond is almost more popular than its predecessor Batman: The Animated Series, and with reason. Featuring Bruce Wayne mentoring a new Batman in a dystopian cyberpunk future, it’s a clever twist on the Batman formula. And it nearly crossed over into live action.

In an interview promoting his upcoming Max, director Boaz Yakin revealed that he pitched and even wrote a script for a Batman Beyond live-action movie:

“…I came up with this pitch on Batman Beyond. It was almost like Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man but a little bit darker — a teenage, kind of futuristic, cyberpunk Batman thing.”

Yakin even worked with Paul Dini and Alan Burnett, the creators of the series, on the script. Sadly, it didn’t come together because Yakin didn’t think he was capable of making a movie that was up to the script, and Warner Bros. wound up going with what became Batman Begins. But we could see a cyberpunk Batman of the future fitting into the current DC cinematic universe. Let’s make it happen, Warner Bros.
