Kevin Feige Reveals How We’ll Meet ‘Black Panther’

Black Panther is probably one of the bigger Marvel movies on the horizon, one many comics nerds thought would never happen. But it is, and in fact we’ll first meet T’Challa in Captain America: Civil War. Kevin Feige broke out what to expect.

For non-nerds, a little background: Black Panther isn’t a superhero title so much as it is a day job. The highly technologically advanced, and isolationist, nation of Wakanda is largely run by the Black Panther, a hereditary title you still have to earn. Wakanda sits on the only known deposit of vibranium. And you might remember vibranium was a plot point in Avengers: Age of Ultron; Andy Serkis’ arms dealer Ulysses Klaw has a supply he stole. And according to Kevin Feige, that’s why Wakanda sends an emissary to the rest of the world:

Today, pre-Civil War, post-Ultron I think he and his father are saying, ‘A bunch of vibranium just got out of here and wreaked a lot of havoc. Maybe we can’t stay behind these borders anymore, maybe we have to stick our heads out and make at least an attempt to be a part of the rest of the world right now, while at the same time protecting our people.’ That’s sort of where we meet him in Civil War.”

It’s an interesting angle, not least because it explains why we’ve had alien attacks, HYDRA running around for 60 years, and who knows what else, and yet, Wakanda never sends a delegation. Although, really, he should be introduced trying to repossess Cap’s shield. You have the most valuable metal in the world and you make it into a battle Frisbee? No wonder the Wakandans doesn’t want to talk to the rest of the Marvel Universe. They probably saw that and just assumed the rest of the world was populated by dolts.
