Comics Of Note, Ranked For July 1

We’ve got near-miss apocalypses, Superman fighting police brutality, and Canadian freedom fighters defeating giant American robots this week. But what took No. 1?

For those new to this column, we rank comics based on how accessible they are and how good they are. A low ranking doesn’t necessarily mean a book is bad, but that it may not be as accessible as others on the list. With that in mind, our No. 1 is…

1. Broken World #2

Humanity has fled Earth, as an asteroid is about to strike. Those left behind were stuck staring at a rock… that blew right past them. So… do you stay on Earth and try to make a new life? Or do you try to find a way back to your family? That’s the thrust of this book, and it’s very, very well done. If you’re not reading it, give it a shot; it deserves it.

2. The Witcher: Fox Children #4

Paul Tobin and Joe Querio deliver, once again, The Witcher: Fox Children #4 Paul Tobin and Joe Querio deliver, once again, a smart fantasy comic that’s about much more than monsters and magic. Although there’s plenty of both, the real weight of the issue is the theme of actions and their consequences… and how people will do anything to avoid them. Smart, moody, and engaging, you should be reading this book.”>a smart fantasy comic that’s about much more than monsters and magic. Although there’s plenty of both, the real weight of the issue is the theme of actions and their consequences… and how people will do anything to avoid them. Smart, moody, and engaging, you should be reading this book.

3. We Stand on Guard #1

America has invaded Canada with giant robots. Okay, so maybe it’s not the most credible premise, but with Brian K. Vaughan at the wheel and Steve Skroce on art? It’s a heck of a book. It’s also not unrealistic: Canada, by 2124, has gotten hammered by a United States that appears to be more than a little paranoid and hostile. If nothing else, it’s a hell of a hook, and worth a read.

4. Bob’s Burgers Vol. 2 #1

Miss the show? This is the next best thing. Whether it’s more of Tina’s “friend fiction” or Louise discovering the secret catacombs underneath the restaurant, this issue is a blast. And the Gene short in particular is a clever bit of comics tribute with Derek Schroeder working in nods to Little Nemo in Slumberland and Basil Wolverton. If you love the show, you’ll love the book.

5. The Spire #1

Simon Spurrier’s fantasy comic gets off to a pretty rollicking start. It’s the far future; there are normal humans, who run the enormous Spire of the title, and then there are the Skews, genetically engineered species that anchor the economy and run the place. One of the humans has just been killed, and it falls to the City Watch to solve it. Spurrier’s sharp characterization and fully realized world really deliver something special here, and Jeff Stokely delivers some beautiful work that gives the Spire character and style. If you’re a fantasy fan, give this a read.

6. Vertigo Quarterly: Slam!

I admit, Vertigo’s anthology books can be variable. But this collection is easily one of the best the company’s put out recently, with almost every story a winner. There’s a little something for everyone here, and there’s enough quality that it’s worth the $8.

7. Red Skull #1

A dirty dozen of super villains are sent to find proof the Red Skull is dead. Unfortunately, he died among the Marvel Zombies, so finding that proof will be harder than it looks. This book is pretty dark, but definitely a fun read, and probably one of the best Secret Wars tie-ins so far.

8. Arcadia #3

Most of humanity is digital, loaded onto servers in the wake of a plague. “The meat” keep the servers running in terrible conditions while the digital suck up power and try to work on a cure for the plague. But neither side trusts the other, and… well… things are about to get stranger. If you haven’t been reading this powerhouse debut, get on that; it’s a spectacular book, and surprisingly thoughtful in a multitude of ways.

9. Action Comics #42

I admit, I was genuinely worried about the direction Greg Pak and Aaron Kuder were taking this book. It’s always risky to do a timely comic about social issues, and Superman dealing with police brutality and the reaches of the law, while fitting the character, could have gone wrong.

It doesn’t. If anything it’s a surprisingly nuanced take on how communities struggle when they fear the people who are supposed to protect them. There are a few parts that don’t quite click; I don’t buy the motive of the petty, dickish villain. But this is more relevant and compelling than a Superman comic has been in a long time, and it’s a great thing to see.

10. The Spirit #1

Trying to follow-up on one of the greatest, most influential comic books of all time is a tall order, and Matt Wagner and Dan Schkade can’t be faulted for lack of effort. That said, it feels more like a generic ’40s adventure comic, not the riff on the original this needed to be. Not bad, but really, maybe it’s best to be inspired by the Spirit instead of trying to imitate his creator.

11. Midnighter #2

While I’m sad about the temporary switch in artist from Aco to the (slightly) more conventional if equally talented Alec Morgan, it actually serves this book well, bringing the focus to Midnighter as something more than just, as one of our august commenters described him, “mean, gay Batman.” Midnighter’s violent, somewhat jackass-ish tendencies and how they screw with his life are becoming a theme in this book, giving it enough of an edge to stand out. A better description is perhaps “Batman with some self-awareness of his personal issues,” and that’s a title worth reading.

12. Imperium #6

Toyo Harada is about to steal a cold fusion reactor. Unfortunately, he’s a super villain, with the attendant arrogance and… well, suffice to say things get interesting fast in this issue. There’s a lot of action here, but the characterization is by far the most compelling thing, especially Sunlight on Snow, the sentient robot who struggles with what he does. Highly recommended and a great read.

13. Bizarro #2

Okay, so this is a shameless gag comic. But it’s an incredibly funny shameless gag comic, and that goes a long way. If you need a laugh, this book will give you your money’s worth.

14. Age of Reptiles: Ancient Egyptians #2

There’s not much to Ricardo Delgado’s story, here, but then again, the appeal is the majestic dinosaurs he draws, with Ryan Hill’s eye-popping color work. If you like dino art, or know somebody who does, this will captivate them, and appropriately so.

15. Omega Men #2

I’m not sure how I feel about Tom King’s reinvention of the goofy space warriors as a gritty, serious take on how far you have to go for freedom. Sometimes this book feels like it’s trying a bit too hard, like in the last series of panels, other times it feels like a clever way to talk about idealism versus reality when your life is in someone else’s hands. But either way, it’s trying to do something different, to make a goofy book relevant, and it’s doing a solid job of just that.

16. Batman: Detective Comics #42

Replacing Batman, unsurprisingly, is not easy, but it looks more fun than it probably should be. While this isn’t really doing as much with its setup as I’d like, it’s still some fun Bat-hijinx, and watching Bullock and Montoya work together is always fun.

17. Onyx #1

This space opera is overly dialogue heavy for a book about a space knight killing mutant frogs, but it’s amusing enough. Whether it’s worth putting on your sub list will depend heavily on your tolerance for ’80s-style action SF, though, so I’d give it a flip first before buying.

18. Bat-Mite #2

One of DC’s two gag books this week, this is sadly the weaker of the two. It’s more hit than miss, although the Hawkman “reinvention” is… memorable to say the least, and Bat-Mite’s exile is frankly more interesting than anything in the plot. It’s a valiant effort, but if you’re looking for a funny comic, there are better options.

19. Green Lantern #42

The Adventures of Grunge Hal is still hard for me to take entirely seriously, but it’s forming up into a nice little SF/action book. Nothing groundbreaking, but Robert Venditti is skilled at this kind of thing, and it’s a fun read.

20. X-O Manowar #38

This is a wedding issue, so it’s not exactly thick with action and plot. In fact the backup strips are the best part of the story, bar a few jokes about Ninjak and a certain newly minted Valiant power couple. But it’s cute and sweet, and a good breather for this heavy book.

21. Batman Beyond #2

Honestly, this is beginning to feel more like a continuation of Future’s End than a book that delivers on the promise of a time-stranded Tim Drake filling in as Batman in the future, and we already had 52 issues of Future’s End. Hopefully this book wraps up the Brother Eye plotline and starts living up to the concept.

22. Green Arrow #42

This book rather quickly ditches the tone of the previous issue to find Ollie fighting… uh, flying octopus robots. Unlike Action Comics this week, the social justice themes in the book aren’t integrated as well, are delivered in about the most ham-fisted manner possible in a comic book, and don’t jibe with the overall plot. Also, I’ve got to ask… who okays flying octopus robots? Seriously. Who looks at those and thinks “This is a good idea!”, aside from super villains?

23. Barb Wire #1

Dark Horse’s ’90s book about a hot superhero bounty hunter returns. Or maybe this is a reprint. Considering the tone, the plot, and the smooth but unremarkable art, it could go either way. Overall, there’s just nothing unique about this book, reality show producers shoved in or not.

24. Lobo #8

This gritty SF action book continues to paint by the numbers and within the lines. Remember when Lobo was a satire of books like this?

25. Adrift #1

I get it. This is a video game tie-in. They didn’t want to spoil anything. But that doesn’t excuse setting up a superb concept, namely that our heroine is adrift in space in a wrecked space station, and then spending the entire issue on the backstory of a dead character. Why Matt Hawkins wasn’t allowed to take on this plot hook and is instead stuck writing exposition that’s better suited to a video game’s appendix is utterly beyond me. It’s not a bad book, but it’s a very poor start to what might be a good book.
