The UPROXX GammaStream Turns Up ‘Volume’

Mike Bithell burst onto the gaming scene a few years ago with his experiment in gameplay and storytelling Thomas Was Alone. Since then, he’s been working on a project where he strips stealth gaming down to its essentials. That project, it turns out, is Volume.

Volume is best described as sneaky Pac-Man. The conceit is that you’re watching a thief operate in augmented reality that strips everything down to the essentials: The loot is white diamonds, the checkpoints are little gates, the complex security robots are piles of polygons. It’s also got a strong Robin Hood influence, which will be fun to see in action.

Bithell’s a developer to watch not least because of his deep grasp of game mechanics. Thomas Was Alone is a great game in terms of story, yes, but it’s also a rock solid platformer that carefully introduces new ideas and mechanics, and just as carefully designed levels to use those ideas. Volume so far appears to have the same thought process… but it has not only 100 levels, it’s got remixing tools to make more.

If you’re ready to sneak around, you can watch the stream below, or check it out on Twitch. We’ll run from 3:30 p.m. EST to 5:30 p.m. Join us, won’t you?
