Bruce Campbell And His Boomstick Warm Up The ‘Ash Vs Evil Dead’ Audience With Time Travel Hints

It feels like we’ve been waiting forever for Bruce Campbell to once again put on the chainsaw and battle an army of evil deadites. Starz made their announcement last year that this wait would soon be over with their series order of Ash vs Evil Dead, but now that we’re a month and a half away from its premiere, more questions regarding the show’s subject matter are emerging.

Earlier this summer, Bruce Campbell, Sam Raimi and Lucy Lawless spoke at San Diego Comic-Con. Amidst the info we were given, some details standout — including the practical effects heavy spectacle we are in for and how this new series will act as a sequel to Evil Dead II since they were unable to get the rights to the third installment of the trilogy, Army of Darkness. So that means Ash does not work at S-Mart in the series, and there probably won’t be time travel involved.

Time travel! What the hell you talkin’ bout, Aaron? For those who may need a quick refresher on the matter, Ash accidentally traveled back in time at the end of Evil Dead II, setting up the story for Army of Darkness which found our hero — and his trusty boomstick — stranded in medieval times amidst a bunch of “primitive screw-heads.”

While Raimi and Tapert were unable to acquire the rights to the third movie, the possibility of time travel in the new series came up in a conversation Campbell had with Entertainment Weekly. By the sound of things, we shouldn’t rule this concept out completely:

I would just say just don’t be surprised if it does happen because ithas happened. So I would say that would be on the table as well. Especially, once you get into a series, your stories have got to cover you for five freakin’ years, you know what I mean? We’re having the discussions with the writing team now where we’re like “Okay, season 2!”

Sure, that’s not as straight forward an answer as one may want, but it’s something. To be fair, Campbell hasn’t been able to spill every spooky little bean regarding the highly anticipated horror series. But the fact that a time travel storyline is indeed on the table seems to open up many more possibilities on where the show may go.

I’m just speculating here but since they apparently can’t reference anything from Army of Darkness, a time travel component may give us as close to a storyline to that film as possible. And how great would the season one finale be if Ash, Pablo (Ray Santiago) and Kelly (Dana Delorenzo) ended up being transported to another era? At the very least, that’d definitely set us up for some intriguing story possibilities for Season two!

Fan theories and speculation aside, let’s focus on the present for at least a little while longer. Ash vs Evil Dead will kick off its 10-episode first season on Saturday, October 31st. This is going to be one groovy Halloween, baby!
