The friendship between Ben Affleck and Matt Damon runs thick and the two have been buddies for a good chunk of their lives. Writing Oscar winning movies, making cameos together, producing HBO series about filmmaking. They’re living the high life and competing now, as well. Take Affleck’s choice to enter the world of superheroes twice to this point. Damon hasn’t yet dipped his toes in the pool of superheroics, and apparently he’s a little bit more picky than his buddy.
Speaking with the New York Daily News about The Martian, Damon talks about what would make him open to doing a superhero film and how Affleck is handling his role as Batman:
“I think he approached it the right way, which is, ‘Can I make a great superhero movie?’ rather than, ‘Do I want to play a superhero?’ I’d consider it if the right thing came along”
That right thing may have come and gone twice now, meaning we may never see Damon in some toss away comic book role, unless Christopher Nolan comes around. It turns out that Damon almost could’ve played Daredevil, but turned it down. This allowed Affleck to come in, frost his hair, fall in love, and play Matt Murdock in a passable adaptation of the Marvel Comics series:
“For us it was always ‘Daredevil’ — that’s the comic we read when we were kids,” says Damon. “But when that one came along (in 2003) I chickened out, because I couldn’t tell. I hadn’t seen the director (Mark Steven Johnson’s) work and I didn’t know. So I just said, ‘No.’ Ben was like, ‘I gotta do it…
“If Chris Nolan came up to me and said, ‘I want to do Daredevil,’ I would be in.”
He could always play some version of Robin in the new series of Batman films. Some older, wiser version like Nightwing. Make that happen DC Comics, get these two best friends on the screen together and let the chemistry explode all over the audience. They’ll be screaming and crying in pure bliss at all the acting power on screen. Maybe let them both do commentary on the steel book Blu Ray re-release of Daredevil when season two of the series premieres on Netflix. Capitalize on that success.
