‘Suicide Squad’ Will Show Off Deadshot’s Poor Romantic Decisions

It’s a standing rule of dating, no matter who or what you’re into: Don’t date crazy. Deadshot, though, isn’t noted for following rules, so of course in Suicide Squad, he’ll be showing Harley Quinn his mallet.

In Empire this month, we learn a little more about how Suicide Squad unfolds, and it turns out it will have the classic story of a woman breaking free of a toxic relationship with the help of a new love. It’s just, uh, the “toxic” there might be literal, because the third side of this triangle is the Joker. Director David Ayer notes:

It’s about her breaking free of The Joker and becoming this fully actualised, independent person. That really is a metaphor for everyone’s journey here.

This raises the question of just what David Ayer’s dating life is like, if he thinks being driven insane, suffering from Stockholm syndrome, and joining a gang of government assassins is a metaphor for getting out of a bad relationship. Hell of an OKCupid profile, though.

Anyway, Will Smith notes Deadshot’s poor decisions aren’t limited to his dating choices in the movie:

As the movie opens, he has a really big career score. He’s looking to turn over a new leaf with his daughter after the hit, but it goes wrong. It goes terribly, terribly wrong. And it lands him in Belle Reve for life.

Hey, at least he’ll get a date out of it. We’ll find out just how wrong his hit goes August 5.
