For years now, we’ve been hearing various murmurs and rumors about the possibility of a new Tomb Raider movie, because of course we have. A sexy female James Bond/Indiana Jones is an idea Hollywood is, rightfully, never going to give up on. Well, it seems like a new Tomb Raider movie is actually starting to come together following the release of the critically acclaimed video game, Rise of the Tomb Raider.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Tomb Raider reboot will be helmed by the amazingly-named Roar Uthaug, the director behind the well-received disaster flick The Wave. Uthaug is apparently a utility player, having also directed horror, action and family comedies in his native Norway.
Tomb Raider has also picked up a new writer. Last we heard, Evan Daugherty (Divergent, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) was penning the script, but up-and-comer Geneva Robertson-Dworet has apparently replaced him. Robertson-Dworet wrote the 2012 Black List script Hibernation and will be co-writing the upcoming Transformers 5.
Thus far, we don’t have much word on what the new Tomb Raider movie will be about, aside from the fact that it will focus on Lara Croft’s first history-desecrating adventure. That makes it sound like it may be a take on the story told in the 2013 Tomb Raider video game reboot, although a straight adaptation of the game would probably have to be R-rated, so I’m sure some changes will be in order.
So, a new Tomb Raider movie may actually be happening, which means we’re now duty-bound to viciously debate who should play Lara Croft. My vote goes to Hayley Atwell or possibly Alicia Vikander, but feel free to voice your inferior opinions in the comments, below.
