Watch A Curious Chewbacca Interview Real Scientists About Holograms, Lightsabers, And More

Ever wondered just how plausible the technology from the Star Wars movies really is? Apparently, we’re surprisingly close to creating real versions of C-3PO and R2-D2, but what about holograms, lightsabers and carbonite? Well, the always intellectually curious Chewbacca has set out to learn more about Star Wars tech in “Chillin’ with Chewie,” a series of videos from the University of Michigan.

First up, Chewie tackles holograms, which we have now, although unfortunately we’re still some ways away from firing off quick holographic messages and selfies Princess Leia-style…

Next, what about space travel? Obviously, we don’t have hyperspace capabilities, but how would we, say, get a spacecraft to Mars?

On the subject of freezing somebody in carbonite — “Freezing people isn’t actually that difficult, bringing them back, though, that might be a little harder.” Especially if they’re being held captive by a giant space slug.

And finally, don’t mean to disappoint you, but it doesn’t sound like lightsabers are happening any time soon.

Interestingly, the common thread in most of these videos is that we just don’t have the power to make our favorite Star Wars tech a reality. One day somebody’s going to create a super-powerful new battery and a lot of things are going to change.
