J.J. Abrams Only Directed ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ For One Telling Reason

The general consensus is that J.J. Abrams did some very solid work rebooting and recreating the Star Wars universe with The Force Awakens. But what if he had turned down the job? According to The Times, he almost did.

In an interview to promote this week’s release of what is widely expected to be the biggest movie of the year, Abrams said he “didn’t want to be the guy who does sequels.” This sentiment makes sense somewhat, as Abrams has already directed two major franchise sequels, Star Trek Into Darkness and Mission: Impossible III. A man can only take (or direct) so many sequels.

But behind any good director there’s a good woman and that holds true in Abrams’ case. After telling producer and LucasFilm president Kathleen Kennedy that taking the reins on The Force Awakens “sounds like the wrong idea,” his wife, Katie McGrath, convinced him otherwise.

Thanks, Ms. McGrath. You and your husband did good.
