The X-Men: Apocalypse trailer is incredibly promising, featuring scruffy Magneto, bald Professor X, and pubescent versions of the classic X-squad. But what would improve it even more? Cheap animation and ’90s character design!
Yes, it’s the classic (well, “classic”) ’90s cartoon, overlaid with the audio from the trailer. There’s nothing quite like seeing the ominous folk electro of Snow Ghosts laid over animation from 1992. What’s most surprising is that Philysteak, the YouTuber who built this, really did go through and try to find as many one to one matches as possible between the cartoon and the trailer. Apocalypse growing to enormous size is perhaps more impressive with modern computer graphics. But really, there’s only so much you can ask of outsourced early ’90s animation.
Mostly this makes me wish the next X-Men movie will be set in the ’90s and feature all the goofy costumes from that era. Who doesn’t want to see Cyclops running around with inexplicable leg braces and Rogue with mall hair? Mister Sinister in his inexplicable costume that was inspired by blue vertical blinds? Just as long as they don’t let Rob Liefeld have a cameo, and don’t adapt any of the actual comics, it’d be amazing.
