A Compendium of Cool Comics Cosplay – NuDC Edition

Welcome to Gamma Squad’s regular Friday comic book cosplay feature, spotlighting the best superhero (and villain) related costuming from the cosplay community.  This week we’re looking at the rebooted DC universe, featuring characters who’ve found new life in the NuDC, some others who’ve undergone revamps and some that have sadly been left behind.
Gamma Squad is committed to giving a voice to the cosplay community that thrives in groups like TheSuperheroCostumingForum.com. Each week we spotlight our favorite costumes and each month we host a cosplay contest. We’ll be picking a theme for each month and inviting cosplayers, costumers and photographers to submit related pictures of their work to our Flickr group to be considered. We’ll then pick our top choices and post them on Gamma Squad for the adoration of all.
The theme for the upcoming month is:

  • Batman: Friends and Foes
  • But in the meantime, let’s continue with this week’s selection relating to the new DC universe!

Tim Drake’s new costume has been nicknamed “The Swan Queen” within the comics fandom, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t cosplayers willing to try and make it look good. An amazing effort here!

The new take on Starfire has certainly been one of the most controversial decisions in the DC reboot. Kelldar recreates her look in happier days – before amnesia took over.

Dwayne McDuffie’s creation has been one of the winners in the NuDC, gaining a solo title in the reboot. And this cosplayer pulls off a kick-ass version of the character themselves.

Poor Stephanie Brown. After the discredited character clawed her way back from death to take on the mantle of Batgirl, she has now lost out in the reboot, not only losing the cowl, but also, seemingly, seeing her tenure as Robin erased from continuity. But fans like this cosplayer aren’t going to forget the Girl Wonder any time soon.

A lot of people were surprised to see Jason Todd headlining his own book in the new 52 and the title has been one of the most controversial books of the line. However, it says something about the loyalty of the character’s fans when they were preparing cosplay of his new costume before the book even hit the stands.

A solo title from Paul Levitz and Marcus To puts Huntress amongst the winners in the NuDC. And this cosplay? Definitely a winner!

Another success in the rebooted DC is Jaime Reyes, the Blue Beetle. After his last solo title was cancelled, he’s bounced back to headline once again. This cosplayer’s fantastic costume definitely earns our admiration.

Supergirl’s new costume gets the cosplay treatment here. And we have to congratulate Calla on reproducing it amazingly, well before the first issue of the 52 was even published.

Before the first issue of the rebooted Catwoman hit the stand, writer Judd Winick was proudly talking about how sexy the book was. As soon as it hit the stands, there’s been accusations of regressing the character to a one-dimensional sex fantasy. However, as this take on Catwoman shows, it’s entirely possible to be zipped up from head to toe and still look fantastic.

Alas, poor Lois and Clark. We knew them well. It seems there’s no place in the new DC universe for a happily married couple, so they had to go. Thankfully there’s some cosplayers around who still have a romantic spark.
