‘Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Might See Nick Fury Tonight

It looks like ABC might be less shy about using Marvel Cinematic Universe characters than we thought. The network is dropping anvils that Nick Fury shows up during tonight’s episode of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Don’t take our word for it; check out this promo, especially the fact that the eagle in the S.H.I.E.L.D. seal suddenly has an eyepatch. And ABC is hinting they’re going to be doing stuff like this every episode.

On one level, it makes sense. While we’ve noted that it’s unlikely Thor will streak down from the skies to enjoy an ale with the team, largely thanks to what it costs to get them out of bed, they still want to establish connections to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. Also, Samuel L. Jackson is, at heart, a geek; a man who demanded a purple lightsaber is not a man who will turn down showing up in a Marvel TV show.

On another level, we kind of hope they don’t make a big deal out of, say, Kat Dennings showing up to deliver a few lines. Not that it isn’t cool, or that we don’t want to see much more of Kat Dennings, just that it can feel more like a ratings stunt than a natural progression of the series. Either way, the episode promises to blow up the plane, so, hey, it’s already getting a little zippier.
