‘Star Wars’ Inspired Ridley Scott To Make ‘Alien: Covenant’ The First Of A Trilogy Of Prequels

A couple months ago, back when Alien: Covenant was still known as Prometheus 2, Ridley Scott hinted at big plans for his prequels, saying there would be three or four Prometheus movies before they finally link up with the events of the original Alien. Since then Prometheus 2 has become an official Alien movie, so does that mean the plans for a sprawling prequel quadrilogy have changed? Apparently not.

In a recent Australian press conference, Scott confirmed that Alien: Covenant will the first of a new Alien trilogy

Prometheus was borne out of my frustration that on Alien in 1979, I only did one as I don’t normally do sequels. I was amazed that in the three that followed that no-one asked the question ‘Why the Alien, who made it and why?’ Very basic questions. So I’m now going to the next one, which is the next evolution directly connected with the first one, in which we saw Dr. Shaw and Michael Fassbender in two pieces and we’ll kind of pick it up there and it will evolve. When that’s finished there’ll be another one and then another one which will gradually drive into the back entrance of the film in 1979.”

It’s true, Scott hasn’t traditionally done sequels. So why’s he suddenly on board for a whopping three Prometheus sequels?

Star Wars will be a juggernaut. Why do you think I’m doing sequels?”

Welp, points for honesty! Alien: Covenant begins filming next March, and will hit theaters October 6, 2017. What do you folks think? Excited for a new Alien trilogy, or is going the Star Wars route the wrong choice?
