Panasonic Is Building A Real-Life Version Of The Power Loader From ‘Aliens’

Panasonic has rolled out a lot of fascinating discussion of its exosuits and robotics work this month. They’re designed robots to improve the quality of life for the elderly, make physical labor less taxing and less likely to injure you, and other genuine efforts to improve the human experience and push us forward. And we stopped caring the instant we saw they were building the power loader from Aliens, because that’s far more awesome.

The exosuit in this video is a bulky prototype, and Panasonic intends to make it smaller. But this couldn’t be more obviously inspired by Aliens if they had Sigourney Weaver driving it. It’s got the clamps, a similar structure, all it needs is a yellow paint job and a fold-out blowtorch and we’re good to take cosplay to the next level. Panasonic intends the full suit to be used in disaster relief and construction, although they notably do not rule out smacking around xenomorphs.

There’s currently no word about when this might be available, although Panasonic seems excited over the potential of these suits and, joking aside, there’s desperate need for these things. In the real world, being able to shift heavy debris and haul more weight across rugged terrain much faster will save lives, mitigate the effects of natural disasters, and make construction work both faster and safer. But we still want it in yellow.
