Andy Serkis Busted Rumors And Dropped Hints About ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’

Master of motion capture Andy Serkis is going to be playing, well, somebody in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Probably somebody pretty important based on the fact that his voice was all over the debut trailer. Serkis recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly to answer a few questions about the movie, or at least sort of answer them. He wasn’t always entirely forthcoming, but there were some interesting things to be gleaned from the interview.

So, who will Serkis be playing in the movie? Well, we now know he won’t be playing multiple characters, as had been rumored.

“Not true at all. I can say I only play one character.”

What about the rumor that he’ll be leading a band of athletic, acrobatic motion capture characters?

“I’m not leading a band of gymnasts or acrobats.”

Hmmm, speaking of motion capture, will Serkis be doing the motion capture thing, or will he be on-screen sans computer generated make-up?

“I can’t say a single thing about that. I’m sorry! These things will all come out in the fullness of time, I promise.”

Come on dude, give us something here! Serkis also talked about his voice-over for the trailer. According to Serkis, no digital alterations were made to his voice, and that the voice was intended to sound kind of wearied because his character has “been through some stuff”. So rest assured Serkis won’t be playing Episode VII’s version of Jar-Jar Binks.

Oh, and one more bit of rumor killing – according to Serkis, other names for he movie like The Ancient Fear were just made up by fans and never actually attached to the movie.

“No, no, it’s always just been called Episode VII to this point. Then I knew it was called The Force Awakens. It’s very pertinent.”

Finally, Serkis described the difficulty of keeping things under wraps while filming, and the reason for all the damn secrecy…

“People were flying drones over the walls to see what’s going on. It’s about not wanting to spoil anything for anyone. The expectation is massive, and nobody wants to ruin it in any way. I think that’s right. No one wants to, by saying the wrong thing or being misleading, you don’t want to dilute it.”

Well, I guess that makes sense. Still, are you sure you couldn’t just tell me the whole plot right now? No? Jerk.
