Peyton Reed Says Rick Moranis Almost Cameoed In ‘Ant-Man’

Even though Marvel’s Ant-Man hit theaters a little over a week ago, the Disney-fueled media machine is still churning out packaged bits of marketing to embolden the superhero cinematic empire. Hence director Peyton Reed’s interview with Screen Junkies‘ YouTube channel, in which he discusses several bits of trivia about the film’s production, as well as where Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang may end up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Perhaps the most interesting bit of news came in the form of veteran actor Rick Moranis, the Canadian actor who got his start with Second City Television and starred in the classic Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Because of the latter, Reed considered asking Moranis to cameo in Ant-Man:

“There was talk. Not to play Hank Pym though. That was one of the things…I of course went back and obsessively watched all the shrinking movies I could think of. When it got to Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, I was like ‘I really miss Rick Moranis, Man!’ And there was talk about like should we have him do some strategic cameo in the movie? But we already had a couple of strategic cameos in the movie then it felt like ‘Okay, that might be gilding the lilly.’ And we felt that if we were going to get Rick Moranis back, he’s got to have more than a cameo.”

Reed never says who Moranis could have played, but if it were just a cameo, then it wouldn’t have been that big. Who knows? He might have played Peachy in the San Quentin scene.

As for the tiny superhero’s future in the MCU, Reed alluded to the possibility of Lang’s character achieving significant growth in future Marvel movies:

Listen, I think with Hank Pym and Scott Lang, and with that technology, I think it’s safe to say at some point somewhere you’re going to see some real growth for that character. I hedge my bet there, because it could be sort of growth as a human being, emotional growth, or literal giant growth. There’s a good chance of that.”

We see what you did there, Reed.
