As It Turns Out, Marvel’s ‘Ant-Man’ Was ‘Improvised A Lot’

For the moment — and with good reason — the eyes of nearly every Marvel fan are laser focused on Avengers: Age of Ultron. But, let’s not forget that it won’t be the only Marvel movie coming out in 2015. Following Joss Whedon’s film, the Paul Rudd-starring Ant-Man will take center stage… but how good can it be after all the turmoil that’s taken place behind the scenes leading up to the start of production? Well, it’s hard to say, but a new quote from actor Bobby Cannavale is giving people reasons to be hopeful.

From CBR:

The actual work — the scenes with me and Paul Rudd, and Judy Greer and Michael Pena — felt like an indie film. It felt like fun. [Director] Peyton Reed [and the studio], they weren’t mercurial about the script. They weren’t mercurial about the humor, at all. They let us be in charge of that. We improvised a lot. Judy Greer’s very funny. Paul’s very funny — he’s a great improviser. The rewrite of the script that Paul did with McKay — and I’ve worked with McKay before — lent itself to that.

Marvel movies have featured improv in the past, but never to the level being discussed here (except all of Iron Man, according to Jeff Bridges). By the sound of it, Ant-Man is starting to become a lot more McKay/Reed heavy than previously thought. When Edgar Wright departed, the whole team seemed like nothing more than some hired guns to get production back on track, but based on this, it definitely appears that everyone involved in the film has tried to make it something special after all. Here’s hoping it works out.
