Michael Fassbender Says ‘Assassin’s Creed’ Is Like ‘The Matrix’ Without All The CGI Effects

I know we’ve been here before, but it seems like Assassin’s Creed could very well be the first good video game movie. Not “guilty pleasure” good, just, y’know, actually good. Michael Fassbender, who usually chooses his projects pretty carefully, certainly seems to believe in the project.

In a recent interview, Fassbender compared the Assassin’s Creed universe, in which people travel through time by accessing “ancestral memories,” to The Matrix.

“I’ve always thought about The Matrix when we’ve approached this movie. This idea of DNA memory elevates it from a basic fantasy genre piece, because you have something an audience can actually believe in. Then the journey becomes so much more elevated, because you’re on board in a different way.”

That said, don’t expect Assassin’s Creed to indulge in the bullet time and rubbery CGI the Matrix movies eventually overdosed on…

“What is really cool is that our action sequences are on real sets and real locations. There’s very little green screen in this, which is highly unusual in these films. We have stunt guys jumping across buildings in Valletta. We’ve got stuntman Damien Walters doing a 120-foot leap of faith, without any rope, into a bag, so it’s pretty incredible to see.”

Man, I like everything I’m hearing about this movie, but I’ve been burned too many times before. The adaptation of Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia also looked really promising, and it ended up as bland as dishwater. I think that’s the real danger here – I doubt Assassin’s Creed will be your typical bad video game movie, but it could very well just be boring. Let’s hope that’s not the case.

Assassin’s Creed sneaks into theaters December 21, 2016.
