Important Research Discovers What Music Cats Prefer

Cats are adorable, but they seem to have terrible taste in music. But is there a type of music that appeals specifically to cats? The answer is two-fold: (1) Yes, and (2) Who would even ask that?

Three researchers (Charles T. Snowdon, David Teie, and Megan Savage) asked it, answered it, then published their results in Applied Animal Behaviour Science. In an paper titled “Cats Prefer Species-Appropriate Music,” they created “two examples of cat music” and gauged cats’ reaction to those two pieces and two examples of “human music.” (Skynyrd? I hope it was Skynyrd.)

What makes something cat music? It’s music “in the frequency range and with similar tempos to those used in natural communication” of domestic cats, of course. Man, I bet they love Björk.

The researchers found that domestic cats significantly preferred “species-appropriate music,” with the youngest and oldest cats preferring it the most. Of course, the real question is, what the hell does cat music sound like? Here you go:

Whoops, that was Sigur Rós. The cat music is actually embedded at the end of this article, but I defy you to tell me it doesn’t sound like Sigur Rós.
