Chris Pratt Could Join That Other ‘Ghostbusters’ Movie, Which We Know A Lot More About Now

Last night, Sony announced they’re doing another Ghostbusters movie in addition to the Paul Feig directed one. This other Ghostbusters movie is being produced by Channing Tatum, Joe Russo, and Anthony Russo. Sony is hoping Channing Tatum will also star. This news explains why the Russo brothers (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War) just signed a three-year deal with Sony, although we wouldn’t rule them out of directing something Spider-Man related for Marvel’s Phase Three as has been rumored.

This most-recently announced Ghostbusters movie has also been rumored since last year. Described in the rumor as a spin-off, it would supposedly star Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt, who are friends in real life and reportedly wanted to work together for a third time. (They’ve already worked together in 10 Years and The LEGO Movie.)

Now Badass Digest provides an update on last night’s announcement from their Sony sources, and it ties back to those spin-off and Chris Pratt rumors.

First of all, this new Ghostbusters movie isn’t all-male. It isn’t ‘guy-centric.’ I spoke to three different people who were baffled as to where that came from. But it does have some guys at the center – the concept here is a movie that spins out of the chemistry between real-life friends Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt. […]

As for the movie itself: it’s complementary to the Paul Feig film. This isn’t a sudden reboot or a change of course. The plan is to have this new Ghostbusters universe feel big and have the kind of tonal variety that allows there to be a legitimate shared universe, not just a whole bunch of franchises running in tandem. What’s more, the hope is that after Feig’s Ghostbusters is out and after Tatum’s Ghostsbusters is out the next film will see the two teams co-mingling, Avengers-style. This is planned out, and has been getting planned out for some time – it’s not a sudden change of heart at Sony.

Badass Digest also says this Avengers-style shared universe is at least four movies, including the two reboots, the crossover, and a prequel to at least one of the reboots, but the prequel doesn’t include any of the human characters from the original Ghostbusters. Which is too bad, because we’ll take all the Bill Murray we can get. On the other hand, we’d settle for watching Chris Pratt explain he’s not afraid of ghosts, he’s just allergic to jerks.
