Comics Of Note, Ranked, For July 15

It’s New Comic Book Day, and once again, we’ve gone through and ranked this week’s notable comic books. So what made the grade?

Just a note; this column is designed with casual and new readers in mind. As such, it’s based on accessibility, quality, and, of course, your fine critic’s personal preference as a distant thing. A low ranking doesn’t mean it’s a bad book, just that other books may be easier to pick up. With that, let’s go to the reviews!

1) Dead Drop #3

Ales Kot and Adam Gorham introduce Beta-Max, who is exactly what he sounds like; a superhero straight from the ’80s. But it turns out Beta-Max is a lot stronger than you might think… and his story is a lot more wrenching than you might expect. This has been a great, thrilling miniseries from Valiant for the first two issues, but this issue it finds an emotional heart, and it’s a great read.

2) Hawkeye #22

And with that, one of the best books of the last few years is a wrap. Matt Fraction and David Aja cut loose accordingly; Fraction’s script takes place over just a few minutes, really, but is packed with action, while Aja delivers some of the best layouts in the business and cleverly uses shadow to let the book be substantially more brutal than you’d think you could get away with. It’s smart, it’s well done, and it’s sad that it’s done, but it went out on a hell of a high note.

3) Island #1

Less a comic book and more a literary magazine, Island is an interesting take on the anthology comic. The books themselves are all full stories; you’re getting three 20-30 page comics for your eight bucks. The best, by far, is Emma Del Rios’ opening story of three people discussing a body transplant before things go wrong unexpectedly: Brandon Graham’s piece is… well, it’s Brandon Graham, and Ludroe’s story feels like an underground ’90s comic, for better or worse. Kelly Sue DeConnick has a nice text piece as well, and really considering what the price works out to, this intriguing experiment deserves a shot.

4) Giant Days #5

This gentle, funny college-set romantic comedy just keeps getting better. John Allison and Lissa Treiman are doing an excellent job of capturing how college students act while actually working in some character development, some of it more than a little melancholy. Well thought-out, funny, and above all, a lovely change of pace.

5) Astro City #25

Kurt Busiek’s reaction to the recent nerd hissy fits over girls in the clubhouse has been to quietly write some absolutely great comics putting female characters at the forefront. This one-off, essentially a superheroic take on Sleeping Beauty, is no exception: Hummingbird has had a charmed life, but, of course, there’s a price behind it all. It’s clever, it’s romantic, it’s heartwarming, and there’s just a slight sense of ache to it as Hummingbird makes a tough choice. Once again, Astro City is what superhero comics should be, and a great read.

6) Godzilla in Hell #1

James Stokoe mashes up Godzilla and Dante in… well, a book about Godzilla being sent to hell. Does it make any sense at all? Not a lick. Does it matter? Nope. Just sit back, drink in Stokoe going for broke on the gory, tentacle laden art, and enjoy. The next issues will each be by a different kaiju art expert, so this promises to be a killer series to look at, at least.

7) Martian Manhunter #2

The Martian Manhunter is not the last of his race. He’s a mole, placed to seem the hero and then betray the human race. Turns out, though, he’s nobler than those trying to control him were expecting. But that doesn’t mean there’s a happy ending for J’onn J’onzz. Suffice to say, the ending is… unexpected, and if nothing else, it’s a hell of a cliffhanger.

8) Big Trouble in Little China #13

Jack Burton has escaped from hell! Which would be great if it were still 1986, but as Fred Van Lente and Joe Eisma take over the story, it’s 2015. Jack hasn’t aged a day, everybody else has not taken the intervening decades well, and… well, it makes sense Jack would be completely out of his element anyway, so really he fits right in. This book takes a sharp swerve, and if you love the movie, it’s a great place to jump on.

9) Superman/Wonder Woman #19

Our power couple fights the Suicide Squad… but while normally that’d be a short fight, Superman has been depowered. Probably the most compelling theme of this issue is Superman’s suddenly very keen sense of mortality; being shot now covers him in bruises, and Wondy is starting to worry about a depowered Clark. It’s a nice touch, and it gives the issue some emotional weight it desperately needs.

10) Black Canary #2

Carrying over from a strong first issue, Brendan Fletcher and Annie Wu dial it back a bit to develop the characters around Dinah. It slows up the pace a little, but it’s necessary for the book to work, and it ends on the second most jolting reveal from a book this week, so fans will be pleased.

11) Secret Six #4

This issue jumps back a bit, which is disconcerting: You’d be better served reading this and then issue #3 for a proper timeline. But it’s still a gleefully nasty book, and the introduction of a few old friends just makes it better.

12) Doomed #2

This rather lighthearted book, a sort of knock-off of the Hulk where he can teleport instead of jump, is earning a place in my heart. It’s a goofy book, undeniably, but Scott Lobdell is having fun with the monster tropes, and really, this book would creak if it were self-serious. Worth a shot, especially if you like some slapstick with your heroics.

13) The Book of Death: Legends of the Geomancer #1

Fred Van Lente and Juan Jose Ryp’s barbarian book has little to do with the Valiant event it’s tied into, but on the other hand, it’s a book that, when you read it, you realize it should be scored entirely with metal solos. Ryp’s detailed art and Van Lente’s facility with barbarian fantasy makes this a rollicking good time you don’t have to follow Valiant to enjoy.

14) Doctor Fate #2

After a formulaic first issue, Paul Levitz and Sonny Liew loosen up a bit and develop this new Doctor Fate, an Egyptian-American med student who isn’t entirely sure he’s not losing his mind. A nice touch is that despite his background, he’s not a scientific ninja; a well-done sequence shows him somewhat botching a rescue because he’s not a physicist. It’s still adhering to a formula, but it’s finding a tone and finding its feet. Oh, and if nothing else? That’s one hell of a cover.

15) Rivers of London: Body Work #1

You’d be forgiven for cringing when you read about yet another magical Brit, but Ben Aaronovitch and Andrew Cartmel actually deliver a police procedural that features a London police detective who also happens to be a warlock, not another John Constantine knockoff. That said, Lee Sullivan does better work drawing cars than people, something not helped by Luis Guerrero’s overly slick and smooth colors. Still, it’s a fun little thriller with a sense of humor, and it offers something a little different.

16) Robin: Son of Batman #2

Patrick Gleason and Mick Gray deliver some gorgeous art here, which is good since the story is a fairly conventional monster fight. A fun read, but it feels like something more could be done with the uptight, arrogant Damian Wayne and his pet Man-Bat.

17) Usagi Yojimbo #147

Stan Sakai’s balance of samurai narrative and funny animals has been consistently fun for years in its oddball take on manga tropes, and this is no exception. It’s also fairly accessible, so if you’re interested in this long-running samurai comic, this is a great place to start.

18) Green Lantern: Lost Army #2

This space opera is admittedly an acquired taste, but I’m liking the ideas Cullen Bunn has here, as a bunch of Green Lanterns are trapped in a new universe, not sure of the rules, and running out of power. There’s some compelling stuff for GL fans, and it’s worth a read if you’re interested in DC’s more cosmic goings-on.

19) The Book of Death #1

Building off the events of The Valiant, Gilead is trying to save the Earth by protecting the Geomancer, basically the avatar of the planet. One problem: There are two of them, and one of them is very, very angry. My main issue with the book is that it’s so willing to set up a superhero fight it leaves enough plot holes to make you wonder why nobody in the book is noticing them. But on the other hand, it’s an amusing story and a fun read, so I can’t be too critical.

20) Harley Quinn #18

Harley and her multicultural gang… yes, yes she has a gang now, this is how merchandising comic book characters works… anyway, they’re fighting Evil Popeye. The introduction of a bunch of Harleys actually helps mitigate this book’s biggest problem: With so many different characters, it doesn’t have time to repeat the “Harley is a ditz” joke for 22 pages. That said, it’s become a somewhat generic team book, but I’ll still take that upgrade over more jokes that require Harley to be completely stupid.

21) Justice League #42

The Justice League rallies against Darkseid… who’s more interested in fighting the Anti-Monitor. It’s a pretty, well-written book, but it just doesn’t have the feel of the kind of event it wants to be, which is a shame. Fun for DC fans, but only for them.

22) Death Head #1

This book has three plots: A ghost story, a Catholic schoolgirl realizing she’s a lesbian, and a slasher movie. None of them are particularly compelling, none of them seem to tie into each other, and mostly you just find yourself wondering what Zach and Nick Keller are up to. Joanna Estep delivers some well-done, if a bit too bright for the tone, art, but there’s so much going on here, with so little context, that there’s only so much she can do.

23) The Fiction #2

David Rubin and Michael Garland hand in some beautiful, playful artwork for this book, especially with their layouts, but the plot continues to be a bit… generic. It’s hard to put a finger on it, it’s just that there isn’t really anything about this book that particularly stands out. It’s not a bad fantasy story, but it likely won’t stick with you much after you read it.

24) Oh, Killstrike #3

Max Bemis’ thinly veiled love letter to/rant about the ’90s speculator market and comic book excesses continues, although I’m starting to wish it wouldn’t. Logan Faerber’s art continues to be the highlight here, finding comedy and smoothing over the script’s many rough edges, but the final splash page of this book tells me how it’s going to end up, and honestly, it promises to be cheesier than a Silver Age comic.
