‘Black Science #1’ And Other Comics Of Note, November 27th

Apparently, this is the week comics companies go whole hog, so you’ll have reading material this Thanksgiving. And there’s plenty of good stuff, starting with Rick Remender and Buddy Scalera’s science fantasy series launching today. A full review of Black Science, plus looks at books from DC, Marvel, Image, Dark Horse, and IDW, as well as a look at next week’s Valiant releases.

Black Science actually doesn’t lay out its whole concept in the first issue, but it definitely hits the ground running. Grant McKay, our anti-hero, essentially sprints through an amphibious world hunting for fresh water to save his children, all while beating himself up for his moral failures. It’s a pretty compelling book because there’s a lot of action on the page while sketching Grant himself vividly as a character.

Scalera was a perfect choice for the art; he quotes ’70s fantasy art without paying slavish tribute to it, and that gives the book just the right edge of the fantastic. If you like pulp, science fantasy, or just the creative team, this is a must-buy.

That’s one book… what about the rest available this week?

<!–pagetitle:Deadpool Annual 2013–>

The Merc With A Mouth didn’t always have voices in his head. That’s not an in-universe thing, we mean that the multiple voices you see in captions weren’t originally part of his origin. It turns out, however, that there’s a much more curious reason for that than you think, as told in Ben Acker and Ben Blacker’s story about Deadpool, various Avengers and… Madcap. Yeah. Madcap.

It’s a very, very funny and creative story, especially with Evan Shaner on the art. A well written, cleverly done standalone story, this should be one of your must-buys this week.

<!–pagetitle:Cataclysm: Ultimate X-Men #1–>

This is a solid book, not least because unlike some of these, it doesn’t assume you’ve been paying close attention to the Ultimate universe. So it’s a lot easier to get into, and pretty well done into the bargain.

<!–pagetitle:Sledgehammer ’44: Lightning War #1–>

Mike Mignola and John Arcudi bring back their fightin’ robot from World War II, but this time, he’s trapped in an existential war with himself. Fortunately, he’s roused from it just in time to… meet a Nazi supervillain, who may be up to far more than anyone suspects. Laurence Campbell’s beautiful, moody art perfectly suits this book, and it’s well worth picking up.

<!–pagetitle:Never Ending #1–>

Adam Knave and D.J. Kirkbride ask what, precisely, it’d be like to be an immortal superhero. Especially if your family passed away, and suddenly all you had were your supervillains. It’s an interesting script with a clever time-jumping idea, and Chuck Baxter, our “hero”, is well-characterized.

Unfortunately, Robert Love’s art is uneven; some panels look great, some look fuzzy. But it’s a compelling idea, and if Love can get more time on the art, it might grow into a fascinating superhero comic.

<!–pagetitle:The Maxx #1–>

The Maxx, Sam Kieth’s legendary ’90s indie series that inspired the MTV cartoon, is being reprinted by IDW, and it looks great. The Maxx was a very… different kind of character; Kieth’s dynamic art and troubled, disturbed main character were groundbreaking for the time. The books, meanwhile, look amazing; the original art has been scanned at ultra high resolutions and recolored, making them vivid and beautiful. If you’re looking to see what the fuss was about, or what started the cartoon, this is a good start. Here’s a preview to see what the reprints look like.

<!–pagetitle:Mr. Peabody and Sherman #1–>

Yes, this is a shameless tie-in with the upcoming movie from Dreamworks. So what? Jorge Monlongo’s art can evoke the old, cheap cartoons a little too well at times, coming off as jumbled or flat. And Sholly Fisch’s script is unapologetically just like the old cartoons, complete with terrible puns. But if you’re a fan of the characters, or have a child’s stocking to stuff, this is the comic to do it with.

<!–pagetitle:Mercy Sparx Vol. 2 #1–>

Josh Blaylock’s book is blatantly for fans, being as it was a Kickstarter book, but it’s chockfull of dialogue and exposition, and it kind of makes this book a drag. Matt Merhof does a nice Ed Hardy impersonation when he has to, and his art is clean and quite imaginative, which helps, but you’ll find yourself hard pressed to care about what’s going on in this book.

<!–pagetitle:Grimm Fairy Tales: Quest #1–>

The most damning thing I can say about this book is that it’s so generic I thought I’d accidentally bought one of a dozen other books exactly like it. About the time Cthulu shows up, because of course he does, you’ll probably have checked out. The art’s perfectly competent, but ultimately this is so forgettable and disposable it’s not worth your money.

<!–pagetitle:Forever Evil: A.R.G.U.S. #2–>

Sterling Gates shows us what the government is up to during Forever Evil. It’s a solid action comic, but there’s really not much to say about it beyond that, even if it does bring some welcome definition to one Steve Trevor.

<!–pagetitle:Damian: Son of Batman #2–>

Andy Kubert shows us how, precisely, Damien might handle being challenged, and it crosses a few lines you wouldn’t quite expect. It’s an interesting series, with great art, and worth getting just for the matte paper and Kubert’s drawing, but the plot’s interesting as well. Worth it for Batfans.

<!–pagetitle:Conan And The People Of The Black Circle #2–>

Fred Van Lente and Ariel Olivetti continue to hand in an amusing romp starring Conan of Cimmeria. This unusually light-hearted take on Conan is a heck of a lot of fun, especially as a break for Brian Wood’s superb, but heavy, take on the character. Well worth picking up.

<!–pagetitle:Criminal Macabre: The Eyes Of Frankenstein #3–>

Cal McDonald gets messed with courtesy of a Doctor Strange knock-off. This book continues to be… OK, I guess, it just isn’t breaking any new ground, and really seems to take for granted that you can about all its moving parts.

<!–pagetitle:Captain Midnight #5–>

Eduardo Francisco takes over on Joshua Williamson’s revival of Captain Midnight. It’s good, pulpy fun, but five issues in, Williamson isn’t really demonstrating the point of reviving the character. It’s still a book worth reading if you’re looking for action, but it’s not required reading.

<!–pagetitle:Mass Effect: Foundation #5–>

This book fills in a few gaps from Mass Effect 2, but it’s more for fans of the series than anyone else, unlike previous issues. Still, there are a lot of fans of the series, so if that’s you, this is worth buying.

Jonathan Hickman ends this one on a blowout. Seriously, pick this up; it’s one of the most satisfying crossovers from the Big Two in a long time.

<!–pagetitle:Quantum And Woody #6–>

James Asmus cleverly needles Fred Van Lente in this latest issue. Asmus’s script is unusually tart and political, which is actually a welcome turn not least because he actually gives all sides of the military industrial complex (and America’s firearms obsession) a good working-over. Unfortunately, Ming Doyle seems overworked; the art is noticeably rushed here and off his usual game. Still, it’s a funny book, and becoming one of Valiant’s most consistently funny titles. Here’s a preview Valiant was kind enough to send along.

<!–pagetitle:Robert E. Howard’s Savage Sword #6–>

Dark Horse does great anthology books, and it does Conan books really well. Needless to say, this anthology book of barbarians and bloodshed is a lot of fun. If you like strong-thewed fantasy, this is well worth the eight bucks.

<!–pagetitle:Shadowman #13–>

Peter Milligan and Roberto De La Torre take over on this book, and it’s… a different kind of book to say the least. It turns out the Shadowman loa clinging to Jack Boniface is not all that benevolent, and it looks like it’s a question of whether Jack will give up his humanity and become Shadowman for good, or rid himself of the loa. It’s some pretty compelling stuff, matched perfectly by De La Torre’s gritty, deliberately rough art. Have a look for yourself…

<!–pagetitle:The Massive #17–>

Callum Israel, environmentalist, dedicated pacifist, general nice guy… how far would you have to push him for him to compromise his morals? That’s the thrust of this arc, and it goes to some interesting places, not least because, for all his douchebaggery, Bors, Callum’s target, isn’t entirely wrong. Well worth picking up if you haven’t been following this book.

<!–pagetitle:Mind MGMT #17–>

Matt Kindt wraps up this story of psychic spies with his usual flair. There’s not much to say about this book that hasn’t been said; give it a shot if you haven’t already.

<!–pagetitle:Aquaman #25–>

Geoff Johns finishes up Arthur fighting an undersea zombie king. It’s a fun, pulpy plot, but if you’re not into Aquaman, this probably isn’t going to change your mind. But, hey, at least we know what happened to Ocean Master.

<!–pagetitle:Flash #25–>

A Year Zero tie-in, Barry meets Iris for the first time, and tries to track down a highly dangerous street drug. It’s a fun little issue, but it’s not strictly necessary, although Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato make any book worth reading once.

<!–pagetitle:Catwoman #25–>

John Layman has done an excellent job on Detective Comics, showing a facility with superheroes you wouldn’t quite believe from Chew. This, however, just falls a bit flat. The central villain is a cartoonishly evil rich jerk and overall it feels surprisingly forced. Aaron Lopresti and Art Thibert do quite a good job with the art, it must be said, but overall, this is a surprisingly and disappointingly skippable read.

<!–pagetitle:Justice League Dark #25–>

J.M. DeMatteis and Mikel Janin are doing a fun job with this book; DeMatteis in particular really enjoys mixing up superheroics with philosophical concepts. Which is why John Constantine, Swamp Thing, and Nightmare Nurse go into the human psyche to beat up evil.

Really. And it’s as… off-beat as it sounds. Plus, the book has one of the most hilariously revolting splash panels I’ve seen in a while, and really should be picked up just for that.

<!–pagetitle:The Goon #44–>

Unless you can read Spanish, most of what’s going on in this book starring the verbose Hombre Lagarto will be lost to you. On the other hand, that gives you more time to drink in Eric Powell’s beautiful, expressive, absurd art. The Goon has been on hiatus for a year, and it’s been sorely, sorely missed. Pick up this book, if for no other reason than to discover what Tom Waits has to do with all this.
