We close out the month in comics, and have the lead up to Free Comic Book Day, with some number ones and some strong new titles. Here’s a look at titles from DC, Marvel, Image, Dark Horse, IDW Publishing, Boom!, and Valiant.

Batwoman Annual #1

DC Comics

Or “DC finally wraps up this book’s previous plotline.” The closure is good, but still, fans probably won’t be satisfied.

Amazing Spider-Man #1

Peter’s back! And he’s naked! While the climax of Superior Spider-Man was every bit as rushed, dumb, and disappointing as the comic that launched it, it’s hard not to be happy Peter’s back… even if he is trying to figure out how to put his life back together. And, needless to say, that’s a wee bit more complicated than even Parker is used to. A hoot, and highly recommended.

Southern Bastards #1

Image Comics

Jason Aaron returns to rural noir, but Scalped this decidedly isn’t. Earl, our hero, is an old man returning to his old home county to clean up some family business. But the book takes some rather sharp turns that make it a lot more interesting than a standard noir, helped substantially by Jason Latour’s art and intentionally limited color scheme. Highly recommended.

Dream Police #1

dream police 1

Image Comics

It’s really, really hard not to view this book as a Sandman knock-off, right down to the dumb pun of a title. Bill Farmer and Sid Kotian use a grounded art style that makes the basic universe feel believable, but the script from J. Michael Straczynski is just something we’ve read before, and the ending is a bit of a dud. Why should a sudden change matter in a book chock full of them? Hopefully it’ll improve, or at least Straczynski will try a little harder.

Star Wars: Rebel Heist #1

Dark Horse

Finally, we know what Han Solo’s been up to between the first two movies: Winging it, as always. Matt Kindt delivers everything you want out of Star Wars; this is smart, funny, and action-packed, with great art courtesy of Marco Castiello and Dan Parsons. Highly recommended.

Dexter’s Laboratory #1

IDW Publishing

Yes, the Cartoon Network classic gets a book of its own. And it’s actually pretty great. Derek Fridolfs and Ryan Jampole nail the tone and style of the show perfectly, making for a pitch-perfect book. A great book for kids and fans of the show.

VWars #1

IDW Publishing

Can an America divided between humans and vampires truly unite? Jonathan Maberry, the writer behind the superb Bad Blood, kind of whiffs this one, alas. The book’s a fairly standard conspiracy story, and honestly, the characterization is so flat and one-sided it’s hard to care about anybody in the book, even our alleged hero. Alan Robinson amuses himself with the gore, but really, this book is more a missed opportunity than anything else.

Rai #1

Matt Kindt and Clayon Crain’s story of 4001 Japan is gorgeous thanks to Crain’s artwork, but it’s a bit rushed in terms of plot. Kindt simply has to fit too much in to one issue, and it suffers for it. Not a bad start, but a bit unfocused.

Shadowman: End Times #1

Jack Boniface’s war with his shadow loa picks up some serious steam as this mini starts up. Peter Milligan has done wonders with this book, and his script is well paired with Valentine De Landro and Livesay’s clean, yet moody, artwork. A good place to start with this character, and highly recommended.

Batman Vs. Bane

batman vs bane

DC Comics

Peter Tomasi always writes Bane well, and this enormous brawl between the Bat and the man who broke him is a fun read. Inessential, perhaps, but still a hoot.

Vertigo Quarterly: Cyan

DC Comics

Honestly, these nine stories vary so widely in theme and style that it’s difficult to peg this book. Fabio Moon and Joe Keatinge hand in a strong story, for example, but some others feel a bit like leftovers. Worth flipping through to see if you’re interested, but at $8, it’s a bit of a stretch to recommend.

Adventure Time 2014 Annual

Boom! Studios

Yeah, this is aimed squarely at kids, but it’s pretty adorable. Laid out like a storybook, it’s fairly ideal if you’ve got kids to give comics to, and well-timed for Free Comic Book Day.

Page 2

Green Lantern: New Guardians Annual #2

DC Comics

When you become the White Lantern… what happens to your dark side? Justin Jordan, Stephen Segovia, and Edgar Salazar have an answer. It’s more to kick off the next arc than anything else, but it is a good exploration of what it means to have universe-altering power.

Batgirl Annual #2

DC Comics

Something’s wrong, very wrong, with Poison Ivy… and that’s meant on multiple levels. Gail Simone takes the expanded room to look at Ivy across four seasons and pry apart what makes Pamela Isley tick. Honestly, it’s better than her Villain’s Month issue. If you’re a fan of villain stories, this is one worth picking up.

Silver Surfer #2

silver surfer 2

Dan Slott and Mike Allred deliver a truly joyous romp of a book. Slott’s pacing and dialogue are fairly clever, not least because Dawn Greenwood is her own character; while the Surfer is fighting yet another cosmic entity, she’s leading a breakout that actually works. Which ends in a way that only a Surfer book really could. Highly recommended.

Hulk #2

hulk 2

What do you do with the most dangerous man in the Marvel universe when he’s essentially a six-year-old? That’s the question here, although admittedly it’s mostly a big hero fight; this is a book that features the Abomination, after all. It’s a bit unfortunate because the book could use a little breathing room to establish its concept a bit more. But it’s still a fun read, either way.

Blackout #2

Dark Horse

Frank Barbiere and Colin Lorimer deliver some solid comics, but honestly, it’s not really clear why this is being put out other than to expand Dark Horse’s superhero properties. The King Tiger backup feature, by Randy Stradley and Doug Wheatley, is honestly a lot more engaging.

Flash Annual #3

DC Comics

Don’t be fooled: It’s not Wally West on the cover of this issue. We do get to meet the new, decidedly different Wally, but he’s not the focus. Instead, Robert Venditti and Van Jensen set up the next arc in the book… a Barry from a dark future coming back to, well, we won’t ruin it. But it looks to be a lot of fun.

Vandroid #3

Dark Horse

This book, already teetering on the edge of tiresomely campy, goes right over the side in this issue. Nerd ninjas throwing protractors is just a little too goofy to work, even for this book. It’s still an amusing read, but it needs to dial back the camp to be more than that.

King Conan: The Conqueror #3

Dark Horse

Dark Horse continues to keep up the ’70s tradition of Conan books being more or less completely over-the-top. Not the best Conan book in the current line, but good macho fun, complete with Conan urinating on his own tomb.

Pariah #3

Dark Horse

As this book goes on, it’s running into a pretty serious problem: The plot is vague and that in turn makes the characters hard to sympathize with. Essentially the book asks us to root either for a vaguely evil and fascistic United States government/corporation or a bunch of genetically engineered teenagers who are just generally vaguely unpleasant, like the libertarian subreddit Marty Stu who anchors this issue. The book feels rushed, with a lot of gaps, and it takes for granted that we’ll root for the underdog just because they’re at a disadvantage. Hopefully the next issues will focus on why we should care about what’s going on.

Loki: Ragnarok And Roll #3

Boom! Studios

This book takes something of a turn in this issue, as Eric Esquivel amps up the gore and slows the plot to a crawl. Most of this book consists of two gory fistfights. Honestly, it just doesn’t quite come together, as hard as Jerry and Penelope Gaylord try to make it work with the art. Mostly for people who say stuff like “Metal!” unironically.

Batman Eternal #4

DC Comics

After a rough issue last week, this rights the ship somewhat. Barbara obviously isn’t taking her father’s imprisonment very well, and who can blame her? Also, the Spoiler is rapidly becoming an interesting character in her own right, to the point where you kind of wish the book was about her.

Furious #4

Dark Horse

This book, about a deeply screwed-up superheroine trying to fix herself, builds to a pretty nasty payoff. Bryan Glass’ lingering on the need for attention that makes somebody put on a mask and fight crime, crossing with celebrity culture, is a story worth reading simply because it’s one of the smarter takes on the psychology of a superhero. Highly recommended.

Serenity: Leaves On The Wind #4

Dark Horse

Honestly, this series has the same problem that the Buffy and Angel books do; the further away they get from the main series, the more they feel like fanfic. Still, watching Zoe beat the crap out of people is entertaining, if a small part of this book.

Hacktivist #4

Credit to this book as it wraps up: It has the courage to call out the idea that people from another nation can “help” the people of another achieve freedom. That said, it is a little predictable and a bit confused as to how political systems and people actually work, but hey, every miniseries needs a rousing finale, right? A solid book, and hopefully the sequel the book hints at will be even better.

Black Science #6

Image Comics

The first volume in Rick Remender and Matteo Scalera’s reinvention of pulp SF ends with a bang. Part of the fun is just the sheer creativity of the book, but the plot is full of complications, and Scalera’s sheer imaginative force often elevates an already great book. Highly recommended.

Captain Midnight #10

Dark Horse

Well, one can’t accuse this book of aiming small. It’s a pretty big blowout of a story, laying waste to Midnight’s personal relationships. Solid as usual, although you’ll want to start at the beginning with this one.
