David Fincher’s “Spider-Man” Sounds…Pretty Terrible

Let’s just get this out of the way right now: David Fincher is a very visually accomplished director, and he’s good with actors, but he’s got no story sense whatsoever and precisely one theme: everything sucks. Not that he will explain why everything sucks, it’s because everything just does, and that’s depressing. Watching a David Fincher movie is like arguing philosophy with a Hot Topic customer. Which is fine when you’re making movies about serial killers or reverse-aging Brad Pitts, but not exactly great when it comes to Spider-Man.

Io9 has an interview with him for “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, and Fincher has this to say about how he would have opened his version of “Spider-Man”:

The title sequence of the movie that I was going to do was going to be a ten minute — basically a music video, an opera, which was going to be the one shot that took you through the entire Peter Parker [backstory]. Bit by a radio active spider, the death of Uncle Ben, the loss of Mary Jane, and [then the movie] was going to begin with Peter meeting Gwen Stacy. It was a very different thing, it wasn’t the teenager story. It was much more of the guy who’s settled into being a freak.

Oh, and he was going to kill Gwen Stacy in the first movie. You know, because in the comics, she was introduced and then offed in a single story arc. That was totally what made it shocking.

Stick with serial killers, Dave.
