Really, a Deadpool movie shouldn’t exist. If it hadn’t been for some leaked footage and overwhelming fan reaction, Fox never would have rolled the dice on the Merc with a Mouth. But apparently it helped that Oscar-winning directors were two of those fans.
Or at least fans of the script, which is even better news. Digital Spy, breaking down what it learned from interviewing the cast and crew, stumbled across this nugget:
It turns out [director Tim] Miller is friends with both James Cameron and David Fincher, who read the script and pushed for a green light. “Having guys like Fincher and Cameron pushing certainly didn’t hurt and we very well might not be sitting here if it hadn’t been for those two,” said screenwriter Rhett Reese.
We assume it’s because the movie makes fun of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Joking aside, we’re not just going to see a Deadpool movie, we’re seeing a movie that the director of The Terminator read the script for, picked up the phone, and told his studio to give a shot. Who knows? Maybe when Cameron gets sick of making Dances with Aliens, he might finally be talked into making an X-Men movie. Could we get Michael Biehn as Cable?
