‘Destiny’ Finally Leaves The Xbox 360 And PS3 Behind With The New Expansion, ‘Rise Of Iron’

Things have been rather quiet on the Destiny front for a while (its last major expansion came out nearly nine months ago), but Activision and Bungie aren’t done with their MMO-shooter yet, no sir. Today, Bungie officially announced their next expansion, Destiny: Rise of Iron. Given that title, the expansion’s first trailer is appropriately metal, featuring multiple wolves, flaming axes and all other manner of badassery. Here’s the rather brief official story description for Rise of Iron.

“Guardians must rise to the challenge to take their place as the next generation of Iron Lords. Along the way they will join forces with a legend from humanity’s Golden Age to defeat a plague of unstoppable evil once and for all.”

In terms of new content, Rise of Iron will contain two new areas (The Plaguelands and Felwinter Peak), a six-person raid, a three-person strike, patrols, Crucible maps and features, a bunch of new cinematics and a “light” level cap increase. Sounds like a lot of stuff, although perhaps just a bit thin considering how long it’s been since the last update.

Ultimately, though, probably the biggest news is that Destiny: Rise of Iron will be rising above the Xbox 360 and PS3. Up until now, Activision and Bungie have continued to support last-generation systems, but they’re now freeing themselves of those shackles. That means some holdouts will have to upgrade, but it should also mean Bungie can now do some stuff the old consoles prevented them from doing.

Destiny: Rise of Iron arrives September 20, will cost $30 and requires you to own past Destiny expansions. Folks who pre-order get the snazzy “Iron Gjallarhorn” rocket launcher as a bonus…
