First ‘Thief’ Trailer Sneaks Up On Us

It’s been nearly a decade since we saw a new Thief game. And by the looks of things, it was worth the wait.

Here’s the trailer itself, although it’s not clear how much of this is pre-rendered footage and how much in-engine.

For those unfamiliar, the Thief series was built entirely around stealth. Garrett uses light and dark, strategy, and a few trick arrows to get to his target. Going in hard and fast is pretty much a one-way ticket to being killed, and in fact killing a guard was often a major demerit against your overall score, so puzzling out how to get through without being noticed is key.

Despite not seeing a new entry for a long time, the games are still popular on Steam and in fact sold like gangbusters when they finally arrived last year, so it’s safe to say demand is pretty high.

Still, there’s reason for fans to be nervous This game is coming courtesy of Eidos Montreal, the developers of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and it’s actually been in the works since 2009. It’ll mark the first real change in developer for the series; the third game was technically developed by Ion Storm, but most of the team had worked on the previous two games.

Especially interesting is the fact that this won’t be headed to any current-generation consoles: In fact it’ll only be going to the PS4 and, as you might notice from the trailer, “other next generation consoles”. The plural there is particularly eye-catching, since this game will be arriving next year.

Regardless of the platform, we’re looking forward to this one. Especially if we can finally get our hands on some moss arrows again.
