Five Games: ‘Game Of Thrones: Iron From Ice’ And Everything Else You Need To Play This Week

Consoles, PCs, handhelds, Facebook, smartphones — the world of gaming is becoming increasingly confusing and fragmented, but don’t worry, we’re here to simplify things for you. Each week I’ll rattle off five games I think you might want to check out this week. Keep in mind, these articles aren’t meant to be comprehensive lists of everything coming out that week so much as a nice rounded tasting menu. So, let’s get to it…

This Week’s Racing Game

The Crew (PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One & PS4, Dec. 2nd)

The Crew is essentially a racing MMO that lets you drive all the way across a virtual United States and enter into races with online opponents wherever and whenever you want. Sounds great – if it actually works. Sony’s similar, yet much less ambitious, Driveclub has been broken since launch and The Crew is published by Ubisoft, the guys behind Assassin’s Creed Unity and countless other buggy messes, so there’s a good chance The Crew might be the latest gaming debacle in a year full of them. Let’s hope it’s not, because the game really does look super-promising.

This Week’s RPG Compilation

Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix (PS3, Dec. 2nd)

Okay, try to follow along – Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix is an HD compilation of Kingdom Hearts II, Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep (which was originally for the PSP) and all the cinematics from Kingdom Hearts Re:coded edited together into a three-hour movie. Got all that? Because I’m not sure I did.

This Week’s Indie Platformer

Lumino City (PC & Mac, Dec. 3rd)

Lumino City is a new indie platformer in which you advance through various beautiful shoe box diorama worlds via the usual jumping and by manipulating the environment. Maybe not the most original indie game, but it looks nicely polished. Here’s the game’s Steam page.

This Week’s Treasure Trackin’ Adventure!

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Wii U, Dec. 5th)

Man, I was so close to making this the pick of the week. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker finally gives Mario’s freaky little mushroom buddies their chance to shine in their very own adventure. Captain Toad can’t jump, so you have to carefully maneuver him around tiny, intricately designed stages which you have to twist, turn and re-position in order to uncover every secret. Basically this is Nintendo doing their own, intentionally small-scale indie game, and it looks great.

Pick of the Week

Game Of Thrones: Iron From Ice (PC, Mac, Xbox 360, Xbox One & PS4, Dec. 2nd)

Surprise, surprise, the first episode of Telltale’s Game of Thrones series comes out this week! As Dan laid out here, Telltale’s games are all about making agonizing, life-and-death choices, which pretty much suits the Game of Thrones universe to a T, so yeah, get ready, because winter is coming all and all that. Note: if you’re planning to play GoT: Iron From Ice on Xbox, you’ll have to wait until December 3rd.

Not a bad collection of post-Black Friday stragglers this week! Any games you’re itching to get your hands on that I failed to mention? Hit the comments and let the world know.
