Consoles, PCs, handhelds, Facebook, smartphones — the world of gaming is becoming increasingly confusing and fragmented, but don’t worry, we’re here to simplify things for you. Each week I’ll rattle off five games I think you might want to check out this week. Keep in mind, these articles aren’t meant to be comprehensive lists of everything coming out that week so much as a nice rounded tasting menu. So, let’s get to it…
This Week’s MMO Shooter
Firefall (PC, July 29th)
Firefall, the first big project from Red 5 Studios, a company mostly made up of ex-Blizzard employees, arrives today. As you would expect given who’s developing the game, Firefall has an MMO structure, but it’s gameplay is more along the lines of Tribes, with lots of jumping and jetpack action. Looks solid, and hey, it’s free-to-play, so you may as well give it a shot. Here’s the game’s Steam page.
This Week’s Simulation
Industry Empire (PC, July 29th)
There are plenty of strategy games out there were you get to play as a political or military leader, but what about the titans of industry that really rule our society? Industry Empire lets you build your own massive industrial conglomerate from the ground up. Have fun with that whole American dream thing! Here’s the game’s Steam page.
This Week’s Very Very Indie Game
Eidolon (PC, Aug. 1st)
Eidolon takes place in a highly stylized future world long after the fall of mankind. Explore the unstructured world, and piece together what happened to humanity through remnants from the past. So yes, this is about as indie as a game can get without also being a 2D platformer. Here’s the Steam page.
This Week’s Cute Shooter
Lovely Planet (PC, Mac & Linux, July 31st)
Looking for a shooter that’s a little more upbeat? Well, that’s Lovely Shooter, a new FPS that takes place in a cartoony, flat-shaded Mega-Man Legends-esque world. Here’s the game’s Steam page.
