Godzilla has had many looks over the years; undersea dragon, brawling fat dude, iguana with Bruce Campbell’s jawline. But for the upcoming Godzilla: Resurgence, the first Japanese Godzilla movie in more than a decade, Toho has decided they want a nightmarish Godzilla.
Toho is playing things close to the chest with this movie, although they have admitted that they’ll be using a mix of CGI and classic tokusatsu models and miniature effects, much like the Attack on Titan live-action movie. Even the teaser is little more than screaming crowds and music cues. Still, images have leaked of the suit, and boy is it creepy.
The suit goes back to the original idea for Godzilla, which is that he’d be covered in keloid scars and burns thanks to nuclear radiation. Various shots of the suit show these scars, and also burns so bad he doesn’t have skin in some places. He’s even got mutated teeth sticking out of his jaw at all angles. He’s almost a zombie version of Godzilla, and don’t forget there are rumors this will be a 3D movie.
Fans are of course divided. Some like the new look and that Toho, after the deliberately goofy Godzilla: Final Wars, is making the series a more serious take on the Big G. Others were hoping Toho would leave the serious takes to Hollywood. Either way, we’ll get our chance to see just what this new Godzilla has in store, as the movie premieres July 29 in Japan and later this year in the U.S.
