A Fan-Favorite ‘Gotham’ Character Is Probably Still Alive (SPOILERS)

When Gotham comes back on February 29, at least one popular character may be resurrected, according to Ben McKenzie (Jim Gordon). Even though proto-Joker Jerome (Cameron Monaghan) seemed to meet his end with a stab to the neck in episode four of season two (and strong feelings were had), we still wanted there to be more of this entertainingly loony ginger, even if he isn’t the Joker. (Executive producer Bruno Heller said Jerome isn’t the Joker, but rather the “seed of the Joker,” and they haven’t cast a Joker yet.)

As we’ve seen throughout Gotham season two, the introduction of Dr. Hugo Strange (B.D. Wong) and his secret human experimentation facility has meant many of the criminals presumed dead are currently being experimented upon, including Firefly and Theo Galavan. Just because other presumably deceased characters (like Jerome and Fish Mooney) haven’t been shown to be in Dr. Strange’s “care” doesn’t prove they won’t be brought back. After all, nobody stays dead in comic books. Except Batman’s parents…

Anyway, here’s Ben McKenzie at Wizard World New Orleans telling Comic Book about characters being brought back (partial transcript below), followed by Erin Richards (Barbara Kean) deflecting rumors about her character coming back as an alternate version of Harley Quinn (or a gender-flipped Joker, as one rumor claimed).

“Not only can we [bring Jerome back] but we might. I can’t say definitively but yes. I’ll put it this way: almost nobody that you’ve seen go away is dead. They are all able to come back.”

Shameless was just renewed for a seventh season, so we don’t know what Cameron Monaghan’s schedule is looking like, but it would be awesome if Gotham got him back, even if only for the season finale. Monaghan is a comic book fan, and you could definitely see a fun Brian Bolland influence to his not-Joker-but-come-on-he-may-as-well-be portrayal of Jerome.

Or maybe Ben McKenzie is just toying with our emotions and none of our favorite axed villains are ever coming back.
