Considering they’re in a shared universe, and the first movie shoehorned in Thanos where Thanos didn’t need to be, you’d think the Guardians of the Galaxy and the Avengers would be meeting. But, according to at least one Avenger, it’s not going to happen until Phase Three is over and done with.
Renner, speaking at Wizard World Comic Con Chicago, notes that it’s mostly a matter of scheduling. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Avengers: Infinity War are just shy of a year apart on the release calendar, and both are going to be huge and expensive movies to put out. Or as Renner puts it:
You’ll be eighty years old by then, and I won’t be Hawkeye anymore. I’ll be Dead Guy.
It’s certainly possible we might see the Guardians react to whatever Thanos does to the universe in Infinity War, but they probably won’t be part of the main cast. It likely doesn’t help that the entire cast has busy careers; it’s kind of amazing they’ll be able to get Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana in the same room for a table read, let alone to shoot an entire movie.
That said, we’re sure it will happen eventually. Disney likes money, and one suspects the crossover would make them big piles of it. Hey, maybe Tony Stark could be Peter Quill’s dad; he’s got pretty good odds, considering his record.
