Jai Courtney Gets Refreshingly Honest About ‘Suicide Squad’ Rumors Regarding Mushroom Use

Things got a little weird on the set of Suicide Squad. There were all the stories about Jared Leto, of course, but then there were also the fist fights at rehearsals, the matching (and very permanent, sometimes misspelled) tattoos, director David Ayer giving impromptu haircuts to cast members, and Cara Delevingne cavorting naked through a forest. But not everyone was on board at first.

Australian actor Jai Courtney admitted he “cringed” when he was offered a character named “Captain Boomerang” in the film, but he quickly embraced the role to work with David Ayer, the director of Fury and writer of Training Day. Even though the character didn’t have a more suitably Australian name like “Captain Giant F*ckall Spider,” it seems Courtney committed fully to the role just like the rest of the “skwad,” so much so that he reportedly said he took mushrooms and burned himself with a cigarette while on a Skype call with David Ayer.

The reveal came in a print interview with Empire (as quoted by Yahoo!), but now Courtney he says he was misquoted. Not about doing mushrooms; he completely admits he was on ‘shrooms, but he spoke with Coming Soon to clarify he just so happened to have been on ‘shrooms while researching his role, and Ayer had nothing to do with it.

“The thing is, why would I take magic mushrooms and get on a phone call with David Ayer? Obviously that’s not the case. All I was saying is that I happened at one point to have taken mushrooms, and I was doing a little thinking about my character, and just investigating stuff a little further.”

As one does.

So if you’re keeping track, Jai Courtney didn’t take mushrooms (and possibly burn himself) as a method acting stunt or at his director’s behest. He took mushrooms because he just so happened to take them. Mushrooms: Australian for beer.
