Jeremy Renner Would Fake Heart Attacks During ‘The Avengers’ Because He Wanted Hawkeye To Die

Hawkeye may have some unimpressive superpowers like playing trombone in a ska band, but that doesn’t mean Jeremy Renner is any less happy to have the job, so much so that he was even excited about the prospect of a TV spin-off for his character, now that TV is no longer the “step down” in an actor’s career it was once considered to be.

But Renner didn’t start out being excited about the character. During the filming of The Avengers, he says he so badly wanted Hawkeye to be killed off that he would fake having a heart attack at the end of scenes, just in case they wanted to use that in the movie, you know. Subtle.

During a Q&A at London Film And Comic-Con, Renner said he was “frustrated” during the first movie because, “I was just getting to know who Hawkeye was, and then zap, I go round like a zombie, I’m like Loki’s minion.”

“I just had a heart attack in every scene — I’d just be walking with… Scarlett Johansson, and just like be ugh,” Renner said, clutching his chest theatrically. “And they said, ‘What are you doing man?’ I’m giving you an option, if you just want to kick me out of this movie. Just you know, at any given moment, if you wanna kill me off, daddy’s gonna be having a heart attack.” (Via)

Bet they didn’t see that coming.

Renner added that he wants the character to live now (it’s implied his eyes rolled back and displayed dollar signs like in a cartoon, complete with a “ka-ching!” sound effect). It’s a good thing Clint Barton has survived long enough to bring his bow and arrows to a superpowers fight…
