Let’s Talk Thursday’s Geeky TV: ‘Legends Of Tomorrow’ Goes To A Gulag

Last time on Legends of Tomorrow, Rip got betrayed, Sara was assigned to train Kendra, and Stein discovered Vandal Savage wanted to build a Firestorm of his own. It ended with Ray, Mick, and Stein captured and packed off to a gulag, and we all know what that means: Jail break!

Legends of Tomorrow has shown an interest in short arcs that’s smartly differentiating it from the CW’s two other superheroic shows. After the two part pilot, there was a breather episode where Snart learned his father was an idiot, and then we’re right into another two-parter. It feels paced, well, a bit like a comic book, and increasingly this has the feel of one of DC’s oddball comics from the ’90s, where writers were allowed to throw together a team with a thin justification and just do whatever they wanted with them.

Also, the show’s been unusually fun with the in-jokes and playing with the time travel conceit. Stein pretending he didn’t know Ray was a clever red herring early on, as you had to wonder if the timeline had changed or if Stein was just screwing with Ray. It helps that they’ve got Victor Garber, who’s become the heart of the show surprisingly quickly.

So, yeah, of course they have to break him out of jail. We’ll see just how secure Vandal Savage’s bases are toni
