‘Luke Cage’ Wants To Be Marvel’s ‘The Wire’

We don’t know a lot about Luke Cage, which is not surprising because the show is filming right now. But that doesn’t mean details won’t leak!

A Redditor claiming to work for a music company has posted materials Marvel sent out describing the show. And it’s full of both interesting tidbits and proof that perhaps Marvel’s ambition is somewhat hamstrung by its corporate overlords.

First off, the show is set in Harlem, and deals with the fact that Harlem is being gentrified at a somewhat alarming rate. Luke is not a PI, but an escaped convict working by day in a barbershop and by night as a dishwasher in a sketchy nightclub. The series will follow him as he goes from just wanting to be left alone to, well, you know, being a superhero.

That said, it’s hard not to laugh at these two rather contradictory excerpts:

We like to say it’s all Marvel but closer in tone to The Wire… Marvel represents family entertainment. Our series will never show tobacco smoking or drugs.

Somehow, I’m a little skeptical of that “family entertainment” angle, considering Daredevil featured Wilson Fisk decapitating somebody with a car door. But, hey, whatever makes Marvel feel better about itself.

In other words, Luke Cage is going to be somewhat similar to Daredevil, but with his ability to recover from severe injury making slightly more sense. Just make sure Luke says “Sweet Christmas,” guys. That’s really all we ask.
