Fans Are Working On An Impressive Unreal Engine 4 Remake Of The Original ‘Metal Gear Solid’

The future of the Metal Gear Solid series is very much up in the air following the ugly public breakup between Metal Gear publisher Konami and series-creator Hideo Kojima. Konami claims they’ll continue to make Metal Gear Solid without Kojima, but that’s difficult to imagine given his one-of-a-kind creative mind.

Well, while we wait for whatever Konami’s desperately cooking up, Metal Gear fan Airam Hernandez has begun work on an Unreal Engine 4 remake of the original Metal Gear Solid entitled Shadow Moses. Hernandez has released a trailer for his remake, and the spiffed-up environments are looking pretty damn impressive.

Before you get too excited, let me make it clear that Shadow Moses is not approved by Konami. They haven’t shut it down yet, and have only issued a “no comment” on its existence when asked, but legal censure should be assumed with copyrighted material like this. I mean, this is Konami we’re talking about — the same people who are trying to force their employees to quit and wouldn’t let Kojima accept awards for Metal Gear Solid V out of spite. They don’t tend to be particularly understanding about this kind of thing.

Of course, who knows what’s going on behind the scenes at Konami? If they can’t get it together to make their own Metal Gear, maybe they’ll just shrug and publish this remake. Or maybe they’ll shut down Shadow Moses, but hire Hernandez to help make their game. At this point, the real-life machinations going on at Konami are as twisted as any Metal Gear Solid plot, so nothing would surprise me.
