Secret ‘Mortal Kombat’ Menus That Lay Undiscovered For Nearly 25 Years Have Been Found

The original arcade Mortal Kombat games may seem fairly simple, but they were packed with mysterious, nearly impossible-to-unlock secrets. Some secrets, like the method for unlocking Reptile, were discovered fairly early, but the secret we’re discussing today took more than 23 years to find.

Late last year, the folks at The Cutting Room Floor found the super secret EJB Menu (named after Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed J. Boon) while digging around in the code for the original arcade Mortal Kombat. It was a cool find, but initially it was unclear whether there was any official way to access the menu without hacking into the game’s code. Well, a button code for unlocking the menus has since been found, and demonstrated by YouTuber YourMKArcadeSource.

To unlock the EJB menu, you first need to be playing a two-player game, and then player one and player two have to alternate pushing the block button a specific number of times in rapid succession. Here’s the code:

P1 (x5), P2 (x10), P1 (x2), P2 (x1), P1 (x2), P2 (x3), P1 (x4)

There are also EJB menus in Mortal Kombat II and 3. Here are the codes for those games.

P1 (x5), P2 (x10), P1 (x2), P2 (x8), P1 (x2)

P1 (x5), P2 (x10), P1 (x3), P2 (x1), P1 (x2), P2 (x2), P1 (x3), P2 (x4)

What do you get for entering these codes? The EJB Menu for the original Mortal Kombat lets you check out a stats menu, check out all the character endings, put your name on the top of the high-score list and read some random shout-outs to the developers’ friends.

The Mortal Kombat II menu is largely the same. The Mortal Kombat 3 menu also lets you unlock secret character Smoke and play a secret Galaga-like minigame.

So, is this it? Have we finally uncovered everything there is to find in the classic Mortal Kombat games? Maybe, although if somebody discovers Ermac actually is playable in the original Mortal Kombat another decade down the line, I will not be at all surprised.
