‘Mortal Kombat X: Generations’: Everything You Need To Know

Though it hasn’t produced a film since 1997, Mortal Kombat has shown a surprising resilience when it comes to the Internet. Mortal Kombat: Legacy, an official webseries spun off of Kevin Tancharoen’s pitch for a new movie, was a hit that got two seasons and renewed interest in a movie. And now it’s spun off a whole new show.

The series, Mortal Kombat X: Generations, will have two threads, the first exploring the original Kombatants like Johnny Cage and Shang Tsung, played by Casper Van Dien and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa respectively. In a nice touch, Van Dien played Cage in Mortal Kombat: Legacy‘s second season, and Tagawa played Shang Tsung in the original Paul W.S. Anderson movie back in 1995. The other thread will follow the new generation of fighters we saw in Mortal Kombat X, like Cassie Cage and Jacqui Briggs. The whole cast hasn’t been revealed yet, but we do know that Erron Black, Kung Jin, and Scorpion will be making appearances. There’s not much information about the plot, but we’ll assume it’s about a martial arts tournament held in an alternate dimension where the Earth is the ultimate prize. Why break with tradition?

The series’ director, Garrett Warren, confirmed a release date and also had news about the movie:

The movie doesn’t appear related to the web series, although the good hands Warren’s referring to are likely James Wan’s. As for an exact release date, we’ll just have to keep our eyes out for the trailer, arriving early next year.
