Bethesda Would Only Be Into An ‘Elder Scrolls’ Movie If Peter Jackson Helmed It

There have been quite a few rumors surrounding triple-A video game properties and their potential for a big screen adaptation. We saw Warcraft do well internationally, and Nintendo is getting back into the movie business, so why have some of the most beloved games currently in existence not invaded theaters as well? Unfortunately for the fans, Bethesda head honcho Todd Howard has said that he’s taken meetings for Fallout and Elder Scrolls movies, but why bother? The games will always be better than the movies, and he’s probably right.

“We’ve had a couple of in-roads, particularly with Fallout, which is a bit stickier than Elder Scrolls, but everybody’s kind of asked and I’ve taken a number of meetings over the years and nothing quite clicked where I felt, ‘Oh, that would be as good as the game.”

Now, speaking with Finder, Pete Hines (Bethesda’s Vice President of Public Relations and Marketing) may have made an off-the-cuff statement that’s going to set the newswire ablaze. Maybe he said it to make a hyperbolic point, but… Maybe he didn’t?

“I think if Peter Jackson turned up at Todd Howard’s office and said, ‘I want to do The Elder Scrolls‘, well that would be a pretty serious conversation…but I think Peter is probably pretty busy.”

So if we know Bethesda believes they can make better video games than video game movies, especially considering how their games are true role-playing experiences, we also know they’ve created dense worlds that could absolutely be translated to a more traditional narrative. It’s clear that there’s been some BS’ing around the watercooler, maybe about Peter Jackson bringing The Elder Scrolls to life, maybe not. But a caveat was made, and it’s going to leave some heads spinning.

The pieces connect, too. Peter Jackson loves his gaming.
