If, like the rest of the world, you’re obsessed with Pokemon Go, here’s a handy new hack to try.
The augmented reality game is basically the only thing people are talking about these days. Sure, hunting those cute, cuddly little anime creatures can cause bad things to happen — stampedes in Central Park, catching cheating ex-boyfriends, recovering dead bodies — but the game’s meteoric rise to popularity has also had some positive side effects. Not only does it spell a revival for a certain media franchise, it’s also getting gamers who probably spent the majority of their time staring at a computer screen in their parent’s basement, out into the read world.
Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, it’s common knowledge that certain Pokemon are more elusive (and desirable) than others — we’re looking at you Pikachu. One such character, Eevee, is especially coveted thanks to its ability to evolve into several different Pokemon. Eevee’s evolution is tied to various environmental factors and to certain stones that determine which mutation the creature will take. Because there are so many different Pokemon Eevee could potentially evolve into, the character is one of the most popular in the game, but controlling Eevee’s evolution hasn’t been possible, until now.
A group of Redditors believe they’ve solved the mystery of Eeveeloution by doing just a bit of research, with the help of Netflix. The first season of the original anime series, which you can currently watch on the streaming platform, featured four siblings known as the Eevee Brothers. Each brother was tied to a specific evolution of the Pokemon: Mikey had a standard Eevee, Rainer had Vaporeon, Sparky had Jolteon and Pyro had Flareon.
If you’re into playing Pokemon Go but not looking to tune into the actual show, that’s okay. You don’t really need to know the backstory of the brothers or how they were assigned Eevee evolutions. According to the Reddit thread, in order to control your Eevee’s mutation, you simply name it after one of the brothers. So, if you named your Eevee Rainer, it will evolve into Vaporeon; name it Sparky and you’ll get Jolteon; and call it Pyro for it to morph into Flareon.
There’s plenty of photographic evidence to back the theory up — one gamer even uploaded a video of the trick working.
Of course nothing’s perfect. While plenty of players say using the hack for their first Eeveelution does in fact work, the second and third Eevee mutation doesn’t. In other words, you may want to space out your Eeveelutions if you’re trying to control the character’s mutation.
