Pope Francis has been called one of the more “liberal” popes in recent memory, with his stances on controversial topics such as homosexuality and atheism perhaps not towing the line that most Catholics were used to. Saturday in Poland, the Pope made an appearance at an event for World Youth Day 2016, where he challenged the gathered youths to be more than “couch-potatoes” who spend their days playing videogames, instead urging them into social activism and trying to shape the world around them.
According to Mashable, Pope Francis made his impassioned plea trying to appeal to young people, for them to do more with their lives.
“Dear young people, we didn’t come into this world to ‘vegetate,’ to take it easy, to make our lives a comfortable sofa to fall asleep on. No, we came for another reason: To leave a mark.”
Clearly no one has described the augmented reality game that has swept the world in Pokemon Go to the Pope yet, because that has surely gotten young people out into their communities, sometimes into pits of mud, other times into trouble at concerts, but it sure has gotten them out and about. Then again, that probably isn’t the sort of activism or mark that he envisioned young people leaving on the world.
